REALITY CHECK
For the past couple of months we
have been bombarded by the
press, Congress and parents on
the violent content of primarily
home video games. But our in-
dustry is no stranger to the allega-
tions that video games are be-
coming too violent. Like when
the Terminator 2 video was re-
leased. The media got wind that
one of the objects of the game
was to shoot at the police. They
made it sound as if a child was to
play this game, that they would
get the idea that they could go out
of the arcade, acquire a handgun
and start shooting at cops. That's
absurd!
now Rev. 1.4 has come out and
some of the finishing moves no
longer work with the combina-
tions learned on Rev. 1.1 (see
chart on page 13). Now I have
been told that next week some
time Rev. 2.0 will be coming out.
(I wonder what will be new and
what will remain the same ... )
COMING ...
In an upcoming article, we will be
exploring the idea of VIO-
LENCE IN VIDEO GAMES
including the myths and miscon-
ceptions.
... continued from page 12.
ACQUIRING SKILLS
Then ... Mortal Kombat came out
and the media once again jumped
on the band wagon, remarking on
the violence our children are ex-
posed to. But what they failed to
state was that in order to perform
the finishing move or any special
move, you would first have to
figure out the button/joy combi-
nation. Like breaking a code or
combination lock. Plus ... the op-
erator has the option to shut that
feature off.
CODE BUSTERS
In the course of a week or two,
the following codes have been
broke by my players on Mortal
Kombat II using Rev. 1.1 and
LIPPY THE CLOWN
Lippy suffered from tooth decay
until the Data East dentist refitted
him with some new dentures.
MORTALKOMBAT
Ed Boon did not follow the grand
design of the original when he pro-
duced MKII. In MK it was possible
to perform the fatality even with the
blood feature turned off and the vio-
lence left on. But on MKII, there is
no way you can finish them if you
turn just the blood off, and leave the
violence on. AND ... if you are un-
able to perform the fatalities,it is not
possible to get in the deeper por-
tions (hidden areas) of the game.
Where you can battle other charac-
ters on other battlefields and even
stumble across Ed Boon himself!

I'm sorry if you got the
impression that I was re-
ferring to the gun as a
transmitter. I was limited
on space and needed to
simplify the description of
what the gun (receiver)
has to go through in order
to see the screen Le. when
I used the words "Optical
light" to draw a path from
the gun to the screen.
As I had stated in the Oc-
tober issue, "the guns use
an opto device to send in-
formation to the CPU via
the CRT. Meaning, the
gun looks at the CRT and
sends information to the
CPU. A more technical
description was not
needed for the purpose of
the article. But thank you
for clarifying.
