Namco Ltd. and audio equipment manufacturer
Bose have announced the joint development of
the Namco-Bose Game Sound System for use with
commercial game machines.
Namco sought to collaborate with Bose as the
company felt that the new games with their ad-
vanced graphics required equally realistic sound
reproduction.
The Namco-Bose System uses speakers located
in the rear of the head of the cabinet seat to pro-
duce a high-volume sound field with relatively low
power in a uniquely restricted space, i.e. the game
cabinet. It has been initially installed in Namco's
new driving game, Ace Driver.
The new system uses unique Bose bass playback
technology called the Acoustic Wave Guide Sys-
tem. Bose also applied its research in psycho
acoustics and sound engineering to create what it
describes as a "psycho-acoustically processed cir-
cuit" that is used to help produce lively and real-
istic game sound effects at all output levels.
The speakers consist of a satellite speaker and a
super-woofer which have a rated output of 35 W
and 50 W respectively.
More specifically, by placing them at the head of
seat they are close to the player's ear and easier
to hear. This prevents unwanted sounds from leak-
ing to the outside and reduces perceived noise
from the surrounding environment.
Namco is also considering expanding the system
beyond game machines to act as a sound system
for bigger facilities.

Future scanning projects are planned by the International Arcade Museum Library (IAML).
