Rowe Bill Changers
Precaution: Bogus
$5 Bills

SU&JECT
The Las Vegas areas and others are being hit with
a bogus five dollar bill rip-off. These bills are color
copies on plain copy paper. The Rowe bill acceptors
are not rejecting them. At least the older models are
not.

The symptom is obvious: Funny money in your
stacker. The Secret Service is involved in the inves-
tigation. It is a federal offense to even copy a US bill.

SOLUTION
On the older models: BC-25, BC-12 and BC-35 (all
with sensitivity adjustments) you need to shut off
the Fives. Not all are capable of these adjustment,
call your distributor for a retrofit upgrade. These
upgrades are not free and while Rowe is attempting
to solve the problem with this upgrade, the cost
could be as much as a new changer.
The newer models, can be upgraded a little easier.
The Newer BC-12 and BC-35 models can be modi-
fied and together with a software change can be
brought up to date. The BC-3500, in production the
last two years, should be immune to this scam
(although just recently we did discover bogus twen-
ties in our BC-3500-it wouldn't take fives though).
Check for current program revision 1.6 and contact
your distributor for more information.

Up until two years ago, the National Bureau of
Engraving prohibited magnetic inks to be used in
color copiers. However, lobbyist in Washington
finally convinced the Bureau that they needed the
magnetic ink for better resolution (due to the mo-
lecular structure and properties of magnetics) to
compete in the marketplace.
