With these five statements and conclusions
(plus a lot more verbiage). I was able to
convince my company to re-organize and
tum an overhead expense into a profit cen-
ter. Consequently, the company image was
improved and sales of this multi-million
dollar company were greatly increased.
Service was made an autonomous depart-
ment, directly reporting to the president, but
intimately related to sales.
The results of the changes were dramatic.
We would troubleshoot not only our own
products, but our competitors too, usually
without charge, (parts and actual service
extra). We made customers happy. We
became even more successful!
What does all this have to do with the coin-
op business? I'll try to sum it up as best as
I can. I HAVE A PROBLEM. I see increased
expenses and decreasing profits. I want to
have manufacturers and suppliers that will
help me, not hinder me. And surely, not be
in competition with me. Our business is
such a small business when compared to the
GNP, the overall economy wouldn't know if
we were here or not.
But we are here and I, for one, plan to stay.
Let us work together. It doesn't help me a bit
to have a manufacturer bring out a new
machine that might be better than sex, if the
last one I paid full price for is not making a
profit because of whatever reason.
I know that Customer /Field Service can
make a difference. I've seen it happen, I've
done it. Come on guys and gals. Competition
is good, healthy, and necessary, but back-
stabbing is murder. Perhaps Ben Franklin
said it best, "We must stick together, or we
will surely hang separately."
