Now whether you're on the road, in a store oroutto lunch, duty can literally call from a small pager
in your pocket, purse or attached to your belt. Motorola and Radio Shack have each released a
pocket-sized pager capable of alerting the user of pending duty at the sound of a tone.
Motorola offers the "OPTRX" Numeric Display Radio Pager designated as the "Personal
Message Center" for base to car/ carrier communications. This 5-ounce miniature communicator
with a backlit Liquid Crystal Display includes 8 address functions, several alert and paging
variations and a memory.
Twenty-four characters of either numbers or letters in combination with hyphens and dashes
compose the "OPTRX" message. The "OPTRX" can hold four such messages indefinitely in its
memory.
By inhibiting the on/off switch until a message is read, the "OPTRX" dispells the fear that an
important message will slip by unnoticed
The Motorola pager is equipped with various status indicators which carefully monitor the
instrument to insure effective and efficient two-way communication at ease. The user need never
worry about his communicator failing during an important transaction. The indicator informs the
user of the battery condition, power on and volume setting.
Each message includes a "signature" to distinguish which address it pertains to. The data
alert, tone or optional voice alert corresponds to a designated address.
Motorola kept in mind the varying work environments of the user with the "escalert", silent
and priority paging functions. The" escalert" is designed for noisy environments since the beeping
continually increases until the pager is answered. However, in case the alert sound is undesirable,
the user may tum off the speaker, allowing for silent reception. If a message is specified a priority,
the "OPTRX" will override its silent feature to alert the carrier.
The shock resistant "OPTRX" operates on single unit chargers in l l 7vac or 11 0vac models.
The Motorola pager ranges in price from $90 to $300 in accordance with the selected functions.
Tandy Corporation and Radio Shack have introduced the "Tandy" personal pager which uses
simplicity and practicality to attract not only the professional but also the general consumer.
Like the "OPTRX", the "Tandy" is lightweight and pocket-sized Radio Shack emphasizes
"Tandy's" ability to help active families and individuals "keep in touch" in everyday as well as
emergency situations.
The "Tandy" is also designed to fit in with the user's lifestyle. When the circumstance calls for
silence, the user can take advantage of the pager's memory circuit which retains the signal for
future reception.
The "Tandy" uses a tone alert and POCSAG advanced digital design. It operates on two
mercury "hearing aid" batteries.
Presently being introduced in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area, the "Tandy" pager sells for
under $100. Radio Shack plans to offer the pager in cities throughout the United States.
