SEGA
"FROGGER" INTERMITTENT SOUND
We recently received the following letter from Kim Alexander of Deming Music Co., in Deming,
New Mexico:
Dear Sirs:
Help! I recently moved two of my Gremlin/Sega "Frogger" games into locations that have
carpeting on the floor. One of the games is an upright, the other a cocktail. Both games lose sound after
sitting for a time without being played. Sound will come back if power is turned off and on.
Is it a static problem? (Rubber mats under the games do not seem to help.)
Do you know of a solution? If this happened to me two-out-of-two games, I have to believe it has
happened to many others. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Sta~Tech Journal contacted Sega's Customer Service Technical Group in San Diego for
iriformation on th is problem.
Sega's techs said they have been plagued with this problem for almost two years now and they
don't have a definite solution. There are four procedures that have been successful to varying
degrees. Sega's recommendations are:
1. Measure the resistance between the power supply earth ground and various metal assemblies of
the game, particularly the coin door. (There should be very little resistance as they are all strapped
together.) If the coin door registers a higher resistance, check the grounding strap connection to the
door; it must have the paint scratched away for a good electrical contact to earth ground.
2. Replace the 4-ohm (Japanese) speakers with 8-ohm speakers. It seems the 4-ohm original
speakers' voice coils have a tendency to lock up. Repowering up the game releases the voice coils
and they will work again for some time.
3. Disconnect the fluorescent lamp. The spark from the fluorescent starter can produce a voltage
spike in the sound board, thereby disabling it.
4. Attach an open-ended antenna to the main logic board. (There are 4 different electronic systems in
"Frogger".) Konami boards #0086 or #0100 attach end of antenna to IC5 3 pin 6. Konami board
#8340222 attach end of antenna to IC D4 pin 9. The antenna is open ended and routed from the
main logic board through the game wiring harness.
Sega says the other electronics system ("Moon Cresta" style #8340084 manufactured by
Sega) does not have the problems of the other 3 systems.
Any feedback from the solutions presented here would be most appreciated by Sega's
Customer Service Group. Please contact Phil Dodge at 800/854-1938.

SERVICE TIPS

Rowe Phonographs R81 to R83
SYMPTOM: Reset light flashes when first number is pushed. Won't reset.
SOLUTION:
1) Check inputs on Z501 on Selectorlogic #601-08060. Pins 27 to 36 should be Q = l 7v,A = lv. If
a low voltage is found on any of the inputs in the "Q" state, probably the bypass cap is bad, C506 to
C515.
2) Replace with a .0lElOOv. Better yet, change all 10 of them.
Rowe Phonographs/All Models
Please refrain from using WD40 on any Rowe machine. It creates more problems than it solves.
Especially on the micro switches.
Seeburg Phonographs
SUBJECT: Damping of vibrations in USCls to STD4s.
SYMPTOMS: Skipping or jumping of the pickup arm, or a warbling distorted sound due to floor
vibrations or the phonograph being bumped.
SOLUTION: Install two 5 I 16" pin game post rubber rings on the right rear ( shipping) bolt as viewed
from the front of the phonograph. Remove the nut and washer. Install the two rubber rings (19-0081
Wico) on the stud. Reinstall the washer and nut, and tighten the nut until it's flush with the top of the
stud only.
All Seeburg Phonographs
SYMPTOM: Erratic trip, multiple plays, trip lever binding.
SOLUTION: Inspect top of trip solenoid bracket for signs of copper plug being above the flat surface
or missing. This can cause the plunger to stick in the plug. Replace, if necessary. (Plug #245576).
