DON'T SIT
ON YOUR
TECHNICAL TIPS FOR ATARI "DIG DUG" & "CENTIPEDE"
"Asteroids"!
By Frank Becker, Atari, Inc., Somerset, NJ
Game: "Dig Dug"
Problem: No sound
Solution/Style:
Change cap C 11 on new
PCBs (A038575) or cap
C 13 on old style PCB
(A038156).
Note:
This cap is not the only problem that
will cause no sound; however, it does
have a higher failure rate than you
might expect from a cap and is not as
obvious a solution as changing the
audio amplifier or speaker.

Game: "Dig Dug"
Problem: Game freezes up after
power-up
Solution/Style:
Check option switches on logic board.
• For new PCB (A038575) toggle 5
of option switch at location 9P
should be off.
• For old PCB (A038156) toggle 3 of
option switch at location 2C should
be off.
Game: "Dig Dug"
Problem: Game play
freezes while all characters
cycle through the center of the
playfield. ( Starting location for
Dig Dug.)
Solution/Style:
Change 3rd priority CPU
address buffers -
• New boards (A038575) 74LS367 at
3H and 3J
• Old boards (A038156) 74LS367 at
location 7M and 7K/L.
Game: "Centipede"
Problem: Picture flips in upright
game.
Solution:
Check to see if pins Z and 15 are
connected on the large 44-pin edge
connector.

ROM/PROM TEST RIG
FOR SIGNATURE ANALYSIS
By Bill Say, Banner Specialty Co., Baltimore, MD
I have used the test rig shown below with excellent results to test ROMs and PROMs
that are soldered in-circuit, using the Kurz-Kasch ROM 1 and Signature II test units
with appropriate personality board. (Part numbers are from Augat catalog #101.)
