STARHECH JOURNAL/AUGUST 1982
SYSTEM AUDIO
The game audio section is fairly similar to that of most any video game.
All sounds are created on the super sound 1/0 board (see board set) and
preamplified by an LM3900. This preamplified signal is then routed to a
separate dual amp board. The fully amplified signal is then used to drive
the two speakers mounted in the game top panel. Keep in mind that the
volume pot is connected to the preamplifier on the super sound board and
that the audio amplifiers are mounted by themselves on a separate board.
Also, if the fuse for the unregulated + 12 volt blows, the most noticeable
effect (coin door lamps are disabled) will be a loss of audio.
CONNECTOR
A listing of game connectors may be helpful in troubleshooting some
game failures.
POWER SUPPLY
J3 - Unregulated DC input (9-pin connector)
J6 - AC in (3-pin connector)
J4 - Regulated DC voltages out (15-pin connector)
J5 - Unregulated and regulated DC voltage out (15-pin connector)

Notes
1. All game switches input 74LS244S on the super sound board.
2. The angle encoder is nothing more than a directional and speed
sensing optic board (like Atari steering boards).
3. The voltage input connector pins (JI) on the CPU board are much
larger (higher current) than the connector pins mounted on J2 of the
CPU board and the 4 connectors mounted on the Super Sound 1/0
Board. These smaller connector pins are extremely brittle and can
easily be broken or more likely bent. When placing these connectors
on the logic boards, be careful to make sure all pins mesh into the
female connector.
All connectors are keyed; however, there is an unused IO-pin male
connector J6 (1/0 board) with the key in Pin 8, there is also a 9-pin
female connector J2 (CPU board) with the key in Pin 7. Needless to say,
a 9-pin female with the key in Pin 7 fits nicely onto a IO-pin male
connector with the key in Pin 8. The only giveaway that something is
wrong is that one male pin on the end (Pin 1) is not connected. this
mistake is easily accomplished in bright lights or bar darkness, especially
since the J2 connector is mounted on the middle board. Fortunately
nothing is damaged. The symptom will be all game operations are
normal but no video on monitor.
