THE BEGINNING OF PSALM I HOLY BIBLE, IN LATIN
printed. It was read in Europe half a century before America
was discovered. Please suggest to your deputy that he uncover
his head while in the presence of this great book. Let no Cus-
toms House Official, or other man in or out of authority see it
without first reverently raising his hat. It is not possible for
many men ever to touch or even look upon a page of a Gutenberg
Bible." .
Vollbehr who said he gave the Benedictine Monks of St. Paul
Monastery in Carinthia, Austria, $375,000 for the Bible. This
is the highest price ever paid for a printed book. I obtained

Should you ever visit the Congressional Library in Washington
D. C , do not fail to go up to the second floor and look at the
Gutenberg Bible in the special case modeled after one in the famous
Laurentian Library in Florence, designed by the great Michel-
angelo a fitting place for one of the most perfect, if not the most
perfect copy of all extant Gutenberg Bibles. There, in the ancient
Vulgate Latin, stands the first great message on the first page of
the Bible, printed by Gutenberg: "And God said 'Let there be
light, and there was light.' " One of the most profoundly im-
portant events in the history of mankind was the first printing
of this first page five hundred years ago: Its truth remains for-
ever.
