At the death recently in London of Thomas J.
Lonsdale, the sheet music trade recalled the great
popularity of the popular song, "Tommy, Make Room
for Your Uncle," which was an amazing hit about
half a century ago. The origin of the famous song
lay in a remark of his mother, who said to him one
day, "Tommy, your uncle is coming tonight, and you
must make room for him." The boy of 17, as he
then was, thought it a good idea for a song, and wrote
it that morning. His total income from it amounted
to only about eighty dollars. He had written severajj
songs before, and song-writing then became his means
of livelihood. Altogether he published more than a
thousand songs, and on one occasion he wrote sixtyr
two in two weeks.
