PRIZE FOR BAND MUSIC
Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., Offers $200 for
Best Symphonic Composition, Closing October 1.
To further promote and encourage symphonic band
music in America, the Carleton Symphony Band at
Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, announce
a prize of $200 for the best symphonic band compo-
sition as follows: Rhapsody, symphonic poem, dr
overture. The conditions are as follows:
1. Instrumentation: Two flutes, one oboe; one
bassoon; one E flat clarinet; solo clarinet in B flat;
first clarinet in B flat; second clarinet in B flat; third
clarinet in B flat; one alto saxophone; one tenor
saxophone; one baritone saxophone; one sarruso-
phone or bass saxophone. Solo, first, second, third
cornets or trumpets in B flat; first, second, third,
fourth horns in F ; first, second trombones; one bari-
tone (bass clef); tuba, cello, contra bass, tympani,
and drums.
2. Each composition must contain the name and
address of the composer plainly written on the last
page.
3. A complete conductor's score must be sub-
mitted neatly written in ink and employing only the
above instrumentation.
4. The winning composition will remain the prop-
erty of the composer, but the playing rights will be-
come the sole property of the Carleton Symphony
Band until the close of its February, 1929, tour, after
which time the composition may receive rendition.
5. The contest closes October 1, 1928, at mid-
night.
6. All scores must be prepaid, registered, and
mailed flat to James R, Gillette, Carleton College,
Northfield, Minnesota. Neither the college, the band,
the judges, nor Mr. Gillette will be responsible for
loss of scores submitted in this contest. Every care
will be exercised in safeguarding each score, and as

scores will be returned to the several composers.
7. In case no composition is deemed worthy, the
prize will not be awarded.
8. The Oliver Ditson Co., through its publish-
ing manager, William Arms Fisher, says: "We
will be truly glad to have the opportunity of pub-
lishing the work (referring to this contest) provided
it is of distinctive worth."
NEW CONN SYMPHONY FLUTE
Letter from Famous Flutist of the Cincinnati Sym-
phony Orchestra Cites Its Merits.
A most convincing mark of merit for the new
Conn Symphony Flute is a letter to C. G. Conn,
Ltd., from A. E. Ferboque, celebrated, flutist of
the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, of which Fritz
Reiner is conductor. Besides playing in the orches-
tra Mr. Ferboque is also on the faculty of the Cin-
cinnati Conservatory of Music. This is what he
says in a letter to James F. Boyer, secretary of
C. G. Conn, Ltd.:
"Dear Mr. Boyer: I have just received the new
Symphony Flute, the 100-O, and I want you to
know I think it is a most excellent instrument.
"I find the scale as near perfect as it is humanly
possible to make it, it speaks remarkably well in
the low register, while the high is soft and clear.
"It is indeed an instrument to be praised and
should be played by all who desire to attain a per-
fect technique, as the improvements you have made
help a great deal to master the flute."

radio, has purchased Heath Patent No. 1,638,734,
British Patent No. 257,138, Canadian Patent No. 264,-
391, French Patent No. 607,436. Belgium Patent No.
331,166, and United States Patent Re. No. 17,002.
There are also seven other patents controlled by
Zenith pending in the patent office. The Zenith
Radio Corporation has delayed acting upon any of
the applications from its competitors for licenses,
until the negotiations for the above patents were con-
summated.
F. D. Curtis is now assistant manager of the radio
and phonograph departments of the San Jose branch
of Sherman, Clay & Co.

WHAT CHRYSLER SALESMEN DO
The sales-getting schemes of other trades offer
certain suggestions for the sales manager and deal-
ers of the music business. The salesmen of the
Chrysler-Illinois Company, for instance, were organ-
ized into camps for a spring drive just closed and
the continuous persistence of the sales efforts of
individuals are recorded in "Punch," the official paper
for the dealers and salesmen.
There were prizes in great number with a top
prize of $500 for the salesman with the biggest per-
centage against quota.
"Punch—Pep—Perseverance—Profits — Prominence
and Prosperity" is the long slogan full of meaning
which was inscribed on a banner at a meeting of
camps at the Lake Shore Athletic Club, Chicago, last
week. "Punching the Board" was the great event of
the evening. It is the exciting episode in which the
salesmen register their standing on sales and the
cash prize rewards therefor.
