unimportant, but 1 want to impress upon you that
such nation-wide movements as "Music Memory Con-
tests in Schools," "Christmas Caro'ing." "School Band
Contests," and, above all, the culminating achieve-
ment of the bureau in Chicago two weeks ago, re-
sulting in the adoption by the Music Supervisors'
National Conference of the report recommending
piano playing in schools, of which you have undoubt-
edly heard, did not come about all by itself.
Result of Years of Effort.
It was the crowning glory of many years of inde-
fatigable labor along well planned lines and some
expenditure of money, and had it not been for the
united support of the industry it could not have been
brought into being.
Chamber Potent for Good.
Let me tell you that in your chamber you have an
invaluable agency for "Bigger and Better Music Bus-
iness," that its activities are only now beginning to
reap the harvest of the seed sown during the past
decade, and that with your continued and ever in-
creased support still bigger and better things can be
accomplished. We are actually only at the threshold
of a new era in our industry.
Can you doubt that we are developing musically
as never before? Can you question the ultimate value
to yourselves as music merchants, and do you con-
sider the movement worthy of your support? I leave
the answer to these questions to you!
D. E. Loomis Spsaks
Delbert L. Loomis. executive secretary. National
Association of Music Merchants, at the opening busi-
ness session, told briefly the history of Treasury De-
partment regulations and tax legislation dating from
1919 and bearing on the reporting of income from in-
stallment sales.
In telling something of the promotion work which
is being done by the executive office of the National
Association, Mr. Loomis called attention to the large
amount of printed matter which has been sent, not
only to members but to the retail trade at large de-
signed to inform merchants of the successful carry-
ing out of merchandising methods such as group
piano instruction in warerooms and piano playing
contests, as they have been successfully employed in
numerous cities.

respect. The people of the nation recognize you as
a foremost contributor to their musical progress. In
the sphere of nuance and marketing your name and
work are well and favorably known. Magazines and
newspapers of international influence have paid you
their sincerest compliments. Your spirit of helpful-
ness and co-operation has enabled many an associa-
tion to succeed. You have assisted in moulding pub-
lic opinion. You are beloved of the needy, the aged,
the orphaned, because of the aid you have given them.
Young men pattern their lives after yours, so that
they, too, may make their mark.
"It is fitting that we, your friends, representative
of the vast host of men and women in all walks of
life who admire you. should gather together on this
the fiftieth anniversary of your entry into the music
business to personally pay our respects—to break
bread with you—to shake your hand in congratula-
tion—to wish for you continued and abounding suc-
cess and a long, happy, carefree life to you and Mrs.
Gulbransen."
That, Mr. (iulbransen, is the message that we have
had engrossed in this little volume to which all of
us here have subscribed our names. We desired to
leave with you some permanent record of this note-
worthy occasion. We know you will cherish it be-
cause it symbolizes the friendship and regard of your
friends.
Please accept these tokens of our esteem with our
best wishes for your continued good health and
prosperity.
THE AMPICO HOUR.
An unusual feature was introduced in the program
of the Ampico Hour for Thursday, May 3, through
WJZ of the National Broadcasting Company's Blue
Network. The Ampico String Quartet, under the
direction of Albert Vertchamp, on this occasion makes
its appearance on the air in an all Tschaikowsky
program. This great Russian composer has given
the world some of his most beautiful music in his
compositions for the string quartet and solo instru-
ments, several of which will be heard in Thursday's
program.
