WHO COMPOSED TIPPERARY?
Herr Franz Lehar, the famous composer of the
"Merry Widow" and other light operas, who is at
present in Paris, made a remarkable claim when
asked what was the first waltz piece he composed.
"The first waltz I wrote had no success at all in
Vienna. It emigrated to England, where it was
adopted and became the air of 'Tipperary,' which had
such a tremendous success during the war. B.
Feidman & Co., the music publishers, when this was
brought to their notice were surprised to hear of
Lchar's claim and said: "'Tipperary' was the joint
work of Harry Williams, who is dead, and Jack
Judge, the well-known music hall artist." The first
British Expeditionary Force to land in France during
the war initiated the popularity of the song, which
became the universal marching song of the British
soldier. The air is founded on the old tune "Eileen
Atannah."
