GOVERNOR TO OPEN RADIO FAIR
Acting Mayor Joseph A. McKee Will Also Officiate
with Governor Smith.
Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York will offi-
cially open the Radio World's Fair in Madison Square
Garden, New York City, on September 19. This
will be the third time that Governor Smith acted in
this capacity. Acting Mayor Joseph A. McKee will
be master of ceremonies on opening night.
To greet the governor and the acting mayor and
the officers representing various foreign countries,
some of whom will make a trip especially from Wash-
ington for the opening, will be the officers of the
Radio Manufacturers' Association, the executives of
the broadcasting stations and an audience of the
most popular radio artists, gathered in the Crystal
Studio, from which the events will be broadcast
through half of the United States.
It is understood that Governor Smith will make
an address of great importance, dealing with the utili-
zation of radio in furtherance of governmental ad-
ministration.
The governor will be accompanied by his military
staff and a guard of honor composed of the Boy
Scouts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
will escort him to the show.
VIOLIN FAVORED BY PUPILS
Saxophone Runs a Close Second with Music
Students, According to Tabulated Figures.
Music is more than a means of self-expression to
thousands of men in college today. It spells bread
and butter to many of them, and an occasional spread
of jam for a great many more, says the Conn Music
Center, published by C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind.
When it comes down to selecting the instrument that
is going to do all this for him, the majority of the
votes are cast in favor of the violin, college professors
and musical directors told the Conn Music Center
recently in its investigation of the situation. Thirty-
one per cent of musician-students select this instru-
ment, these authorities say.
Although centuries behind the violin in point of
time, the newest instrument of them all, the saxo-
phone, runs a close second as the choice of 30 per
cent of such students, due to its enormous popularity
for dancing, vaudeville, motion pictures and for solos.
The piano is elected to third place with 21 per cent;
the cornet and organ are chosen by 6 and 3 per cent,
respectively. The remaining 9 per cent is scattered
over half a dozen string and wind instruments which
have a necessary, but less prominent place in the
band and orchestra.
The financial benefits of being able to play an
instrument, the Music Center points out, are not
confined to the money earned while in college or to
the student at all or even to the professional. The
value of industrial bands is being recognized to a

CORE STOCK FOR SCHUMANNS.
The piano buying public is freely made acquainted
by the manufacturers with the soundboard and
veneers in the building of a piano, but the core stock
is too often slighted, although it is of acknowledged
importance in the construction of an instrument.
But in the current number of "Iwantokno," the clever
little monthly publication of the Schumann Piano Co.,
Rockford, 111., it is told that "the core stock for
Schumann instruments is sliced from quarter-sawed
stock to the desired thickness and properly seasoned
and dried. It is then planed and sanded to size and
sawed to the desired design. Another drying process
is then employed before veneer is ever applied."
