SITUATION IN SUPPLIES
Pacti in Various Lines of Commodities Which Enter
Into Musical Instalment Manufacture.
Percy Tonk, head of the Tonk Manufacturing Co.,
Chicago, is taking his vacation by snatching occa-
sional days from the factory at 1912 Lewis street, to
enjoy the pleasures of his country home in the Fox
River Valley where he is a member of the com-
munity forming the Chapel Hill Golf and Country
Club in McHenry County.
The Department of Agriculture conducts rubber
experimentation plantations in southern Florida,
southern Arizona, southern California, Haiti and the
Canal Zone, and in collaboration with other organi-
zations in various other places.
Following a visit to the West and Middle West,
during which meetings were called in fourteen cities,
the Assistant Director of the National Committee on
Wood Utilization of the Department of Commerce,
Dudley F. Holtman, reported in an oral statement
July 28 that national interest is being aroused in use
of American forest resources. Mr. Holtman said

The Liberty Rawhide and Drum Head Mfg. Co.,
4839 North Kruger avenue, Chicago, has been incor-
porated to manufacture and sell drum heads and
other materials involving the use of rawhide. The
incorporators are Martin Bozik, Samuel Surak, Steve
Nosk and Steve F. Placko.
Wool exports from the Bradford, England, con-
sular district to the United States showed a
slight increase in June as compared with June last
year, the American Consul at the English city, A. R.
Thomson, has reported to the Department of Com-
merce.
Throughout many branches of the American eco-
nomic structure, simplified practice methods are rap-
idly being recognized and adopted, the chief of the
Division of Simplified Practice, Department of Com-
merce, Ray M. Hudson, said in his report for the
first half of the current year, just issued.

KILN DRYING VS. AIR DRYING
Results Are Practically the Same, Says Report from
Forest Products Laboratory.
Practically the same effect upon wood is obtained
by kiln drying as by good air drying, according to
the Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis.,
which is connected with the United States Forest
Service. This conclusion was reached after making
some 150,000 comparative strength tests with speci-
mens of twenty-eight common species of wood.
"The belief that kiln drying produces stronger
wood than air drying is usually the result of failure
to consider differences in moisture content," said the
report. "The moisture content of wood on leaving
the kiln is generally from two to six per cent lower
than that of thoroughly air-dried stock. Since wood
rapidly increases in strength with loss of moisture,
higher strength values may be obtained from kiln-
dried than from air-dried wood. Such a difference
in strength has no significance, since in use a piece
of wood will come to practically the same moisture
condition whether it is kiln-dried or air-dried.
"It must be emphasized that the appearance of the
dried wood is not a reliable criterion of the effect the
drying process has had upon its strength. The
strength properties may be seriously injured without
visible damage to the wood. Also, it has been found
that the same kiln-drying process cannot be applied
with equal success to all species. To insure unin-
jured kiln-dried material, a knowledge of the correct
kiln conditions to use with stock of a given species,
grade and thickness, and a record showing that no
more severe treatment has been employed, are neces-
sary."
Pres. Wilcox, director of the Auburn City Band,
Auburn, Ind., has organized a band composed of
Waterloo and Auburn musicians to play at Waterloo
each Saturday night.
