DIGS INTO MUSICAL LOVE
Prominent Musical Director Is Conducting
Interesting Experiments to Determine
Popularity of Certain Instruments.
Paul Specht is conducting a series of novel con-
certs, in which the radio audience is invited to assist
in a research into musical history. The object is to
determine whether the development of certain music
has made necessary the invention of new instruments,
or whether the invention of new musical instruments
has developed another style of music.
In the past decade many new musical instruments
have come into common use. Among these the most
prominent and well-known are the saxophone, the
xylophone, the banjo-mandolin, the vibraphone, the
steel guitar and the ukulele. What Specht desires to
learn is whether these instruments have forced song
writers into the type of music they are now writing,
or whether the new songs have made necessary the
invention of these new instruments.
In order to investigate this, he had obtained the
permission of several museums to take some of the
old-time musical instruments and attempt to play
modern music on them. He started with the old
Greek lyre, and will continue the investigation until
he has used every musical instrument of history up
to the present time. These tests will be conducted
every Friday night from the Twin Oaks, New York,
during the broadcast by WJZ.
