Instrument Gets Big Place in "Jazz America," One
of Great Bandmaster's Compositions.
Sousa is starring the saxophones in "Jazz Amer-
ica," one of six of his own new compositions in pro-
grams for Sunday, October 25, in Chicago. "It's
taken me a long time to write jazz in the 1925 idiom,"
he says; "so, why not make a good job of it?"
The programs will be eloquent of the changes that
have taken place since he was the First Bandmaster
in those exciting days of the World's Columbian Ex-
position of 1892 in Chicago. Thus, who in that time
expected the March-King to write passages that
called for a double quartet of saxophones? Who then
knew the saxophone? Indeed, who knew the sousa-
phone? That was the March-King's own device for
obtaining a distinctive sound; and today the sousa-
phone is part of every big band, of many small ones,
and has a place in the great modern orchestras.
SHOWING NEW VICTROLA.
Advance showings of the new orthophonic Victrola
are being made each day starting today at Drake
Hotel, Chicago, Parlor M, at 10 and 10:30 a. m.; 2:30
and 8 p. m. This new musical instrument reproduc-
ing for first time the entire range of musical sound
was invented by Bell Laboratories of American Tele-
phone and Telegraph Company and Western Electric
Company in collaboration with Victor Talking Ma-
chine Co. It has been called "revolutionary" by
Sousa, Schuman-Heink, Kreisler, Paul Whiteman and
others, in private hearings in New York.
RECEIVER FOR TALKING MACHINE CO.
Judge Elmer Q. Lockyear, of the probate court of
Evansville, Ind., has appointed Frank Elmendorf
receiver for Oscar Grimwood, proprietor of the
American Walnut Co., and the Latonia Talking Ma-
chine Co. of Evansville. The appointment was made
on the joint petition of the Lamasco Bank and the
Morris Plan Bank of Evansville and the City Na-
tional Bank of Boonville, who, to protect their loans,
asked for a receiver in order that credit might be
maintained with which to operate the concerns.
