ing with trade and public by 54 years of
steadfast striving to excel. They repre-
sent the

and moderate price. They are profitable
to sell and satisfactory when sold.

C. H. Randolph, manager of the piano department
of the Euclid Music Co., Cleveland, Ohio, has placed
a Baldwin Grand piano in the Golden Pheasant res-
taurant, one of the largest and most popular Chinese-
American restaurants in Cleveland. In addition to its
use for accompanying singers that appear it will also
be used in connection with Hugh Wylie's orchestra
that is playing there.
The Cleveland branch of the Starck Piano Co. is
now under the management of H. A. Bruck & Sons,
until recently in business on Huron road. The two
boys, Sam and Adolph, will act as salesmen.
Robert L. White, of the Robert L. White Music
Co , is leaving for a few weeks' motoring trip to At-
lantic City, and will visit New York and other places
as well. Mrs. White accompanies him. A Poole
piano, Brunswick phonograph and Radiola Super-
heterodyne have been installed in the employees' cot-
tage on the Lake, manager Click announces.
Ray Shirring, who is known to many in the trade
and who has been associated with the Knabe Ware-
rooms since the store was opened, is now connected
with the Dreher Piano Co.
Fred Stelker, manager of the Shultz Piano Co., and
Will C. Free, have resigned. Mr. Free is entering a
different field and Mr. Stelker as yet has made no
announcement of his plans.
The Starr Piano Co.'s concert room was the scene
of a delightful concert on the afternoon of June 25,
when the employees of the Cleveland Press, their
families and friends assembled to hear four songs
written by T. W. Small, a proofreader of the Press,
rendered.
Miss Renie Burdett, manager of the roll depart-
ment, had charge of the affair and contributed several
numbers. Mr. Small's songs were sung by Richard
Koch, a well-known baritone. They have been well
received in Cleveland.
"The Kiss I Can't Forget," which was written by
Mr. Davis, musical editor of the Press, and set to
music by Phillip Spitalny, was also sung and received
much applause. Several numbers by a Starr repro-
ducing piano were also given, and the whole affair
was a pronounced success.
A drive is now in progress by the Cleveland Better
Business Commission to clean up all bait advertising
and selling methods in the musical field. The aim is
to educate the public, and a talk was broadcasted
June 25 by the commission over WEAR explaining
the methods used by bait advertisers. A series of ad-
vertisements has also been started in the morning and
evening papers, and which are also designed to edu-
cate the public to recognize bait methods in adver-
tising and selling. In both the advertising and broad-
casting the public are invited to report any instances
to the Commission where they feel their confidence
has been violated. It was also pointed out in the ads
and broadcasting that the majority of the music
trade is honest in all respects and that those using
bait methods are in the minority.

Opportunities of School Boards and Music
Supervisors to Stimulate Musical Desire by
Means of Playerpiont Not Recognized.
Every effort to encourage music aids in the inter-
est of the public in player music rolls. Music mem-
ory tests inviting interest in classical music make the
use of the rolls a great convenience and in many in-
stances a necessity. Radio programs every day draw
the hearers' attention to fine music as well as the
transient populars, which may be procured for con-
stant repetition in roll form by the owners of player-
pianos.
While school boards generally recognize the im-
portance of music in the courses in all grades and
music supervisors have responded to the desire, the
latter have not sufficiently awakened to the wonder-
ful advantages possessed by music rolls for increas-
ing the cultural urge naturally resulting in a range
of musical studies in the schools and greater pro-
ficiency in the pupils.
It may be that music dealers are somewhat to
blame for the school heads' failure to make more
general use of the rolls. The opportunities for dem-
onstrating good piano music provided by the player-
piano are not taken advantage of where one of the
instruments is possessed by the schools. And a
15
school without a playerpiano is a sign of indiffer-
ence to the opportunity on the part of local dealers.
In short it is charged that the educationalists have
not made full use of the facilities that exist for train-
ing the pupils of schools and the adult students of
colleges in the knowledge and appreciation of music
by means of the playerpiano and the rolls recorded
by artists.
A more encouraging view is taken by the senate of
the University of London, and its action may be a
source of suggestion for school governing bodies here.
The senate recently decided that the university
library should be extended by a liberal provision of
music scores, phonograph records and playerpiano
music rolls, as a method of enabling students of the
university to become acquainted with classical and
modern musical works in the easiest way.

Mill at Kaukauna, Wis., has enlarged the music de-
partment in his store.

Wis., recently closed out the stock of his music store
and retired from business.

June 15.
The Wisconsin Club, one of Milwaukee's exclusive
social clubs, recently appointed Hugh W. Randall,

& Sons Piano Company, Birmingham, Ala., was mar-
ried last week to Mrs. Inez S. Coxe, daughter of Z. J.

a lovely contralto voice, and is well known in musical
circles in the Alabama city. The marriage was a
