The Schaff Piano String Co., 2009 to 2021 Clybourn

NEW ENGLAND DEALERS ACT
Musical Merchandise and Sheet Music Trade in Six
States Alive to Benefits of Band Contest.
The New England states are keenly interested in
the band contest to be held May 9 in the Boston
Arena, the final event of the National Music Week
celebration. Music publishing houses and musical
merchandise houses of Boston are distributing litera-
ture describing the event and encouraging New Eng-
land merchants to stimulate the band contest sipirt
in their communities.
Over 100 bands will participate in the contest and
in the parade that will mark the opening of the big
event in the Boston Arena. In addition there will
be a demonstration on the Common and a pageant in
the Arena. In a circular issued by the Music Week
promoters, New England dealers are urged to secure
public aid for competing bands.
"Local bands and orchestras should start imme-
diately to secure backing of their city council, cham-
ber of comerce, Kotarians, Kiwanians, and the public
school boards to finance traveling expenses to Boston
and back," is the advice.
ASKS LUMBER FREIGHT REVISION
Interstate Commerce Commission Petitioned by Lum-
ber Interests to Revise Freight Figures.
A revision downwards of railroad rates for lumber
was asked the interstate Commerce Commission in its
general rate structure investigation last week by rep-
resentatives of lumber interests. The investigation
would also correct certain situations in the applica-
tion of certain railroad rates on lumber. The lum-
ber interests declared there was lack of uniformity of
practice regarding the basis of freight charges upon
lumber and forest products.
Freight rates on lumber from any and every stand-
point or basis of comparison are unduly high, the
commission was told. The average freight charge for
transporting lumber and forest products was unjust,
unfair, prejudicial to the rights of and discriminatory
against the lumber industry of the United States as
a whole, and the consumers of lumber, the petition
said.
It was said, for instance, that in some cases the
same rate applies on all lumber produced by various
mills regardless of their location. In other words, all
mills within a certain area take a group rate, while in
other localities lumber moves on a different rate from
every separate producing point.
A branch of the Sterling Piano Corp.'s store in
Jamaica, L. I., was opened recently at 17 Railroad
avenue, Freeport, L. I., with Fred Lawton as
manager.

to the Big Plant of the O. S. Kelly Co.
The importance of the plate in the piano is under-
stood by every dealer as well as by every manufac-

DISTINGUISHING MAHOGANY VARIETIES.
How to distinguish the true from the immature
mahogany is told by Arthur Koehler, specialist in
lumber in a report for the United States Department
of Agriculture. More than sixty different species of
timber have been put on the market under the name
of mahogany, according to Mr. Koehler's report.
Many, if not all, of these have been used in the manu-
facture of pianos, phonographs and certain other
musical instruments. Some of these varieties closely
resemble mahogany and are related to it botanically.
Others have only slight resemblance to mahogany,
but when used as veneer may be mistaken by persons
unfamiliar with its characteristics.
