SITUATION IN SUPPLIES
Pacts in Various Lines of Commodities Which Enter
Into Musical Instrument Manufacture.
Prices for walnut logs in Evansville, Ind., and
Boonville in the same state are reported high, al-
though the supply continues plentiful.
Prices of raw wool continue to soar, foreign buy-
ing being responsible for the increases. A short
supply and expanding demands in F.urope are the
causes attributed.
According to latest advices from London, ivory
prices are very strong since the last quarterly sale
there. Since the close of the war prices have been
practically stationary, a condition partly caused by
the absence of demand from Germany and France.
But with the improved economic conditions there the
ivory prices are affected and an upward tendency
is now noticeable.
Total exports of musical instruments from Czecho-
slovakia or old Bavaria, and Saxony, to the United
States for the first nine months of 1924 amounted to
$1,012,500, or $170,391 more than the total for the
corresponding period of. 1923. Comparing the first
nine months of the current year with the same period
of 1922. a gain of $332,753 is noted.
IN SMALL GOODS DEPARTMENT
Growth of the Musical Merchandise Business Shown
by New Stores and Extensions.
Her ability as a drummer and mistress of all the
traps is one of the assets of Ann Pennington, the
stage star.
White in a drum head is not natural in the hide.
They have to be made white. The "clear" or "trans-
parent" head is the hide in its natural state.
The phonograph record of "Mandalay," a Remick
hit, is a strong seller in San Jose, Cal.
Mrs. Mary Keaney has established the Sandusky
Music Exchange at 1819 W. Monroe street, San-
dusky, O.
sold.

THE MAHOGANY TRADE.
Odd conditions are reported in the mahogany mar-
ket. Mahogany dealers importing logs from Africa
have always been required to anticipate the demand
for their timber months in advance in view of the
delays in cutting and shipping. Never before, how-
ever, has the American mahogany merchant been
forced to contract to the present extent for his wood,
which reaches his yards about two years after being
ordered. The problem of the piano manufacturer,
who orders his veneers a few months before he needs
them, is nothing as compared with that of the
mahogany importer who is placing his 1925 orders
now.
DRUM INTEREST GROWS.
With the drummer realizing his importance, and
the drummer's salaries commensurate with that, it is
only natural to expect that he will be in the market
for a good bit of equipment. The fact is recognized
by observant dealers who are playing up the drum
department, according to the manager of a successful
musical merchandise jobbing house in Chicago. He
declares that the coming months will see one of the
greatest revivals in drum business that the trade has
yet undergone, basing his prediction upon an experi-
ence in selling all kinds of musical instruments over
a long period of years.
WITH WISWELL RADIO CO.
Harry D. Schoenwald, president of the Piano Club
of Chicago, is now secretary and sales manager of
the new Wiswell Radio Co. His piano club asso-
ciates wish him success in his new business.
PATENT FOR KILN FAN.
A patent for a new type of kiln of drying lumber
was recently granted to Rolf Thelen, Madison, Wis.
The invention has to do with a reversible circulation
internal fan kiln, which is designed to dry common
grades of lumber containing a large content of mois-
ture, and otherwise liable to show a high percentage
of degrade in seasoning. To remedy this difficulty

the internal fan kiln is designed to circulate the air
in the kiln at a high humidity and at high speed by
means of a row of disk fans.
EQUIPPED WITH MARTINS.
The splendid Rockford High School Band, Rock-
ford, 111., in deciding upon Martin Handcraft instru-
ments as standard equipment for its band, carefully
considered other makes of instruments and also got
expressions of opinion from many members of the
band. The Rockford Band is one of the best known
high school bands in the, country and their splendid
performance at various gatherings has won for them
national prominence.

street, Cleveland, Ohio, is successor'to Miss Helen
Davis.
