RAPID INCREASE IN
SALE OF INSTRUMENTS
Boom in the Music Trade Draws Forth Edi-
torial in One of the Leading New York
Daily Newspapers.
The great increase of interest in music on the part
of the American public, which has been so noticeable
during the past year or so, has attracted the atten-
tion of the daily press in many parts of the country,
and has recently been the subject of an admirable
editorial in the New York Evening Post which is
quoted below:
"The boom in the sale of musical instruments, so
noticeable this season, is a sign of an era in which
an intelligent participation in music, whether as lis-
tener or performer, is more general than ever before.
The day has gone by when music was supposed to
belong purely to the distaff side of the household,
and a business man felt a little ashamed to profess
enthusiasm for concerts or take a hand in a string
quartet.
Nor are children, as a rule, the only performers in
their households. Learners nowdays have in their
homes and in their social environment a musical
background not known of old. Not every sound-pro-
ducer on the market deserves to be named a musical
instrument, but the various contraptions designed to
produce the spasms and rhythms of jazz may in time
lead to better and more harmonious things."
The striking feature of the public's increased in-
terest in music is the desire which has been aroused
on the part of amateurs to play musical instruments
themselves and not merely to listen to the perform-
ances of professionals. This movement has been
actively promoted in every way possible by the Na-
tional Bureau for the Advancement of Music, and
other departments of the Music Industries Chamber
of Commerce, and has resulted in a greater demand
for musical instruments of all kinds than the country
has known for a long time.
The Strawbridge & Clothier Department Store, 8th
and Market streets, Philadelphia, has added a musi-
cal merchandising section with a complete assortment
of small goods, wind and string instruments with
accessories.
