CENSUS IN PHONOGRAPHS
Federal Bureau Publishes Highly Interesting
Comparative Figures for 1923 and 1921 in
Machines and Supplies.
Talking machine production in 1923 was 67.5 per
cent greater in the fiscal year ending July, 1923, than
that ending July 1, 1921, according to figures just
published by the Census Bureau. A gratifying in-
crease in the production of cabinets, parts and
accessories over the previous year was noted in the
productions for 1923. The valuation of the produc-
tions of the phonograph industry for 1923 was valued
at $107,276,240. In 1921 the value was $98,212,784.
Last year 981,635 phonographs were produced at a
value of $55,551,817. In 1921 the number was 592,493
and the value $3?,361,063. Records and blanks show
a decrease both in number produced and in value
for 1923 compared to 1921. But the value of steel
needles increased 59.8 per cent in comparing the
two years. The production for 1921 was $739,386.
In 1923 it was $1,181,794.
The value of cabinets produced increased 51.1 per
cent, from $1,682,290 in 1921 to $2,544,208 in 1923.
From 154 in 1921 the number of establishments
engaged in the phonograph industry fell to 109 in
1923, but the average number of wage earners in-
creased from 17,938 to 23,194, and the fact is taken
to indicate that conditions in the industry in 1923
were better than in 1921. Of the 109 establishments,
reported last year 24 were located in Illinois, 16 in
New York and 17 in New Jersey.
