receiving end. More often than not the modulation
frequency is not stripped of foreign frequencies borne
on the carrier wave, such as static and "strays," and
these, too, become audible sounds.
By means of the new device in use at the university
station only the modulated frequencies of voice or
music are broadcast, and these, according to the col-
lege scientists, are devoid of the carrier wave ten-
dencies to pick up extraneous frequencies.
Three distinct advantages are claimed for the new
system: Tuning is made more selective at the receiv-
ing station because of the sharper decrement; tuning
out the station at the receiving is easier for the same
reason, and sending efficiency is increased. It is as-
serted that much greater distance may be covered than
possible at present, with reception at 3,000 to 5,000
miles of much higher quality than possible now at
1,000 miles.
Station WRM serves the dual purpose of broadcast-
ing the events of the institution and serving as an
experiment station.
REVOLUTION IN RADIO
New Broadcasting Without Carrier Waves Eliminates
"Static" and "Foreign Frequencies."
New radio broadcasting methods developed by the
experimental department of the University of Illinois
at Urbana may result in revolutionary changes in
equipment, according to a report from the state uni-
versity town. The experiments were in transmission
without carrier waves, which are being conducted at
WRM, University of Illinois, according to scientists
connected with the institution.
Tests have brought responses from all over the
United States that signals, broadcast by the new
method, discovered and in course of perfection at the
university laboratories, came in "loud and clear."
Under the principle of broadcasting now in use, the
carrier wave, constantly going out, conveys all man-
ner of sounds, and only the modulation intensity of
the sound frequency and the action of the detector
tube or crystal in stripping the modulation frequency

of its carrier wave to more or less degree, enables the street, Crawfordsville, Ind., has obtained more space
particular voice or music frequency to be heard at the for its business by taking over an adjoining building.

FOREHANDED BRANCH MANAGER
Harry E. Mitchell, Head of Knight-Campbell Music
Co., Pueblo, Colo., Prepares for Anticipated Business.
The talking machine department of the Knight-
Campbell Music Co., Pueblo, Colo., has been enlarged
and more space has been provided for the musical
merchandise stock. Some of the additional space in
the talking machine department is used for a greater
showing of foreign records, for which the house has
a big call. The business in the foreign rolls is a
steady one that is not influenced by fluctuations in
the business in other records.
The new space in the musical merchandise section
is devoted to a fuller showing of stringed instruments
and a supply of radio sets and radio requirements.
The manager, Harry E. Mitchell, expects a big year
in all kinds of small goods and has prepared for the
realization of his expectations.
ENLARGES RECORD DEPARTMENT.
The new wholesale record department in the new
wholesale building of Sherman, Clay & Co., San
Francisco, is 125 feet in length by 50 feet in width,
and large windows pleasantly light it throughout its
entire length. Robert Bird, the manager of the de-
partment, says the helpful effects of the increased
space in the department are being felt in increased
sales and better service.
