Q R S EDUCATOR ROLLS
USED BY MUSIC SCHOOLS
How the Series Is Helping Teachers in Imparting
Good Music Instruction Told By One of Them.
The splendid work that the Q R S Music Co., Chi-
cago, has been doing in popularizing the playerpiano,
through page advertisements in national magazines
featuring the Q R S Educator rolls, is gaining recog-
nition by musical institutions where piano teaching
is conducted. Those interested in the education of
the young are now calling attention to these rolls as
one of the best means of teaching children to play
the piano, according to many Rress notices and letters
from schools that have recently been received by the
Q R S Music Co.
The following article, under the heading, "Player-
piano Is Latest Teacher Indorsed in Musical Circles,"
appeared in the Spokane, Wash., "Daily Chronicle"
recently:
"Teaching children to play the piano through the
use of illustrated piano rolls is the innovation being
introduced in Spokane this week by the Sherman,

Clay & Co. piano department. Six rolls are included
in the Educator set, which cover the rudiments of
piano playing from the first scale to simple composi-
tions. The rolls were compiled by Lee S. Roberts
from the educational writings of Isabella Hallister
McKee.
"The Educator rolls take the place of the begin-
ners' manual through the printing of the staff, with
simple exercises first printed on the roll and then
demonstrated by the playerpiano. The pupil is taught
to master the bass and trble clefs at the same time.
A sample of what is being done among schools and
colleges with the Educator rolls is shown in the fol-
lowing letter received by T. M. Pletcher from W.
Otto Miessner, director of the School of Music for
the Milwaukee State Normal School:
"Your new Q R S Educator rolls certainly solve the
problem of getting children to practise piano. Our
rolls came just before Christmas and my young hope-
fuls were at the piano constantly—simply couldn't
chase them away. The attraction lasted through the
whole holiday vacation period, and going stronger
every day!
"If you own a healthy nine-year-old, you know
what I mean when I say it's some job to keep chil-
dren interested in the drudgery necessary to master
the piano keyboard. Your new rolls make it easy;
they set the pace, furnish an ever-present model for
them to pattern after, something like the old copy
book that we older folks learned to write by.
"I have been giving a lot of my own time to the
musical education of the youngsters and they have a
regular music teacher besides. Although we may try
to teach the children, we can't learn 'em—they've got
to do the learning themselves. Your rolls accomplish
just this because they invite the children to discover
the facts of music for themselves. What they dis-
cover they never forget.
"Parents and music teachers owe you a vote of
thanks for making it easier to learn piano playing,
and when they're older the kids will thank you, too.
Here's hoping there'll be a million of them!"

COST ACCOUNTING FOR
RETAIL PIANO TRADE
Methods in Book Declared Excellent by National
Association of Cost Accountants.
Praise from experts for the book "Accounting for
Retail Music Stores," issued by the Trade Service
Bureau of the Music Industries Chamber of Com-
merce,, is found in a review of that publication in the
July 16 Bulletin of the National Association of Cost
Accountants. The methods are described as "ex-
cellent" and "should prove of great value to those
interested in music store accounting."
Under the supervision of Professor Archie M.
Peisch, of the Amos Tuck School Faculty of Dart-
mouth College, and a special committee of the Cham-
ber, the accounting system mentioned above was pre-
pared which could be recommended for use by retail
music merchants. The booklet describing the system
is divided into the following six chapters: 1. Gen-
eral; 2. Classification of Accounts; 3. Forms; 4.
Methods; 5. Preparation of Statements; and 6. De-
termination of Taxable Income.
Chapter 1—General—deals with the value of scien-
tific accounting, and contains typical financial state-
ments for music stores, and the requirements of an
efficient system of accounting. Chapter 2 is a de-
tailed classification of accounts. The next chapter
contains 12 accounting forms and records. Chapter
4 explains in detail accounting methods applicable to
a music store. The succeeding chapter contains a
trial balance and financial statements with explana-
tions as to how the latter are prepared.
The last chapter describes how taxable income is
determined, taking up such matters as alternative
methods of reporting profit on installment sales, ac-
counting procedure on dfeerred profits basis, analysis
of accounts receivable, loss on repossession and the
advantages and disadvantages of determining col-
lected and uncollected gross profit for the purpose of
arriving at net taxable income.
