SHEET MUSIC TRADE
TO PUBLISHERS
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiimimiiiimmiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiii
THE COMBINED CIRCULATION
OF PRESTO (EST. 1884), AND MUS-
ICAL TIMES (EST. 1881), IS BY FAR
THE LARGEST IN THE FIELD OF
THE MUSIC TRADE. COMBINA-
TION RATES OF SPECIAL AT-
TRACTIVENESS FOR ADVERTIS-
ING SPACE IN BOTH PAPERS
WILL BE MADE TO MUSIC PUB-
LISHERS.
This department is designed to advance the sales
of sheet music, and give any current information in
the Sheet Music Trade.
This publication believes that Sheet Music will
pay the dealer, just as any other commodity pays
those who merchandise it properly.
The conductor of this department will review
any numbers that are sent in for the purpose. It ia
not the intent to criticise, but to review these offer-
ings, giving particular information of the theme and
a description of the musical setting of the number
discussed.
Address all communications to Conductor Sheet

From Small Beginning in Winnipeg Company Has
Grown to Big Position in Field.
The phenomenal success of Hearst Music Pub-
lishers of Canada, Ltd., is further marked in pub-
lishing circles by its establishing new executive offices
at the Garrick Building, Chicago, 111. The well-
known and courteous Thos. J. Quigley, late of M.
Witmark & Sons, is general manager. Another
change of interest to the trade and profession, is the
engaging of Fred K. Steele, who was with the Broad-
way Music Corporation for many years, to take
charge of professional activities in the New York
office. These announcements are of more than pass-
ing interest to everybody for they forcibly demon-
strate what organization and co-operation mean to
the music publisher.
The Hearst Music Publishers of Canada, Ltd., like
other successful houses, started in a very modest way
in Winnipeg, Canada, where the head offices are still
situated. The old maxim, "You have to publish in
New York to be successful," has again been exploded,
for from that modest beginning the Hearst Music
Publishers of Canada, Ltd., is now a million dollar
concern with offices established in New York, Chi-
cago, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
The numbers, "Beautiful Rose," "In the Land of
Sweet Sixteen," "Ginny," "Some Day You'll Cry Over
Somebody Else," "If I Had You," "She's Got An-
other Daddy," "Someone Like You," are used in
Big Time acts from coast to coast, and enjoy a
domestic and export trade second to none. In short,
the earnest co-operation the company has always
shown the trade and profession has resulted in plac-
ing it in the front rank of the popular music pub-
lishers.
people and among the promises of an early recording
the Brunswick have promised to keep this before
them and as they have already numerous demands
the future looks bright for "Sonny Boy."
HEARST HIT ON XYLOPHONE.
One of the favorite selections of Jess Libonati, the
famous xylophonist, who is touring on the Pantages
Circuit, is "Some Day You'll Cry Over Somebody
Else," a winning ballad of Hearst Music Publishers,
Ltd., New York, and Toronto and Winnipeg, Canada.
The melody lends itself to Libonati's clever treatment
on the instrument which he plays in such a masterly
way.
His trip west covers circuit and includes
Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton and Van-
couver and from then on to Spokane, Portland,
Tacoma, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and re-
turn to New York by way of the southern states.
WILL AID SALES.
A new source of musical merchandise sales is seen
in the plan of some of the transatlantic railroads to
carry orchestras on trains. J. E. Horn, president of
the Consolidated Orchestra Booking Exchange, New
York City, has closed contracts with several of the
roads for entertainers.

"SONNY BOY" MAKES A BIG HIT
New Production of Herbert J. Gott, Chicago Pub.
Usher, Played by Leading Orchestras.
"Sonny Boy," the sensation fox trot of the season,
is a production of Herbert J. Gott, music publisher,
177 North State street, Chicago. This number is
being played by all the leading orchestras in Chicago,
and many outside towns, being featured by over fifty
acts running out of the Orpheum Circuit of New
York. A good many professional singers are using
this number in Chicago and on different vaudeville
circuits. The number is going by radio. This fox
trot will outsell "Drifting" Back to Dreamland," as it
is a better song, according to Mr. Gott, who adds:
"Important of all is this. In a large percentage of
homes you will find a little sonny boy brightening the
home and naturally this song comes to them coinci-
dentally. In pushing it to the radio I am constantly
using the above as a means to push it through and
convince the professionalist that it is of importance
to them."
"Sonny Boy" is already proposed to the recording

A SHEET MUSIC WINDOW.
The advantages of a window display for
the encouragement of sheet music sales is
well understood by the management of the
Sheldon Music House, Charles City, la.,
which recently achieved the "biggest week"
in sheet music with the aid of an attractive
window show of the current music hits. The
window was not an experiment in the
Charles City house. The use of window dis-
plays for sheet music is continuous.
