CONN SAXOPHONE BUSINESS
Great Growth in the Uses and Manufacture of In-
strument One of the Marvels of Trade.
Every knock delivered by unthoughtful people not
averse to newspaper publicity is a boost for the saxo-
phone. The thoughtlessness, or you might call it
the ignorance, of the few quoted in pulpit utterances
in condemnation of the saxophone is in failing to
name the extent of the instrument's uses in band and
orchestra work and in conveying the erroneous idea
that the saxophone is "the agent of the devil that
creates crazy and immoral dances," as one reverend
gentleman phrased it.
The saxophone is useful in dance music, but its
uses arc as wide as art itself. It has been growing
in use and popularity since it was invented in 1846
by Antoine Joseph Sax. In the United States the
success of the saxophone has been an assured thing

FEATURING HARMONICAS
Widow of Great Tenor Asks Release as Adminis-
trator of Her Husband's Estate.
Mrs. Enrico Caruso last week asked the Chancery
Court in Trenton, N. J., through her counsel, to re-
lease her as an administrator of royalties due her
husband's estate from the Victor Talking Machine
Company. She also asked the court to approve the
division of the Caruso estate made by the Italian
courts.
Apparently tbese moves were in preparation for her
wedding to Captain Ernest A. Ingrain, which is ex-
pected to take place within a few days.
The Italian courts allowed her a one-eighth inter-
est in the Caruso estate. Her accounting of the Vic-
tor royalties, filed last week, showed receipts from
that source totaling $585,727 in 1921 and 1922.
Of this sum one-quarter goes to her daughter,
Gloria, and one-quarter to Mrs. Caruso as Gloria's
tutor.

since E. A. Lefebre, a friend of the saxophone in-
ventor, took charge in 1890 of the perfecting of saxo-
phones in the factory of C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart,
Ind.
During the earlier period of the saxophone, its
manufacture was exclusively European. But C. G.
Conn, ever progressive, recognized the possibilities of
the instrument and in the eighties started the manu-
facture of the instruments. The construction of the
instrument was made more simple and reliable for
the performer. The tone quality and scale were like-
wise improved to meet the demands of the artists and
in the early nineties the Conn saxophones had found
their way to all parts of the world as the recognized
standard. The saxophone departments of C. G. Conn,
Ltd., are equipped with the most modern and highly
efficient machinery that money can buy. The growth
of the saxophone business is such that demands for
more factory floor space is continuous.
