ARTISTS USING HEARST HITS
Topliners in Vodvil Using Five of Publishers Suc-
cesses to Great Advantage.
The Hearst Music Publishers, Ltd., New York, re-
port that the Hearst numbers "Wonderful Child,"
"Beautiful Rose," "In the Land of Sweet Sixteen,"
"Some Day You'll Cry Over Somebody Else" and
"Always Looking for a Little Sunshine," are meeting
with splendid success among signers, the following
artists using one or more of them:
Norman Stanley, Bobbie Lowe with Youth and
Melody, Larry Francis of Milford and Francis, Gene
Leighton and Her Rainbow Six, Happy Benway and
Sunny Dinkins, Hatch and Farrell, Dolly St. John,
Jack Reidy of Reidy and Curry, George Britt, Gazette
and Thorndyke, Jack Lipton, Joe McAnallan of Co-
burn's Minstrels, Olga La Marr, Mabel Lorraine,
Frederick Sisters with Mack's Four Steppers, Betty
Baun and Jack Byrnes, Charlie Holdsworth; Fletcher,
Ivy & O'Connor, Barnes and Robinson, Mabel
Besthops and Margie Catlin.
Si Conn, orchestra leader, Proctor's, 125th street,
theater, used "Some Day You'll Cry Over Some-
body Else" as the musical theme for Rex Beach's
famous film play "The Spoilers," and reports that the
song synchronized with the theme of the play as
though it had been written specially for the play, the
theme of the song blending with the scenes and motif
of the play throughout. Mr. Conn states that the
song made the play more impressive at all times, and
considers it one of the best songs he has ever used
for a musical theme for motion pictures.

PIANOS
Our new designs are models of artistic piano
construction. More than fifty designs, a
style for every need at a price for every purse
During the late war, after our country had joined
in it, the custom of rising whenever the national song
was played became the custom—and a good one
for war time. Is it a custom really essential to the
patriotic instinct in times of peace? Does it prove
anything? The following from O. C. Maclntyre's
New York letters seems to possess more than a
grain of sense—and a warning:
A discussion of interest is taking place in Man-
hattan as to whether or not theater audiences should
arise at the rather far-fetched use of the national
anthem. One incident where "The Star-Spangled
Banner" is played took place in history seven years
before the anthem was written. Audiences, it ap-
pears, are objecting to the tawdry appeal to this sort
of sentimentality. Most of them believe that only
where the anthem is played by a military band in
proper settings should the audience arise. At a
Broadway playhouse recently the situation was err.r
phasized when a young man down front failed to
stand as the tune was played. Several around him
said harsh things and one prominent button manu-
facturer applied an opprobrious epithet. It devel-
oped after the curtain had gone down that the young
man had to be carried to a waiting automobile.
Shrapnel had injured his spine and paralyzed his
limbs during the recent war.
