PERSONALITY IN A DRUM
The Wilson Label Represents the Enthusiasm,
Experiences and Ideals of a Lifetime
of Achievement of Tom Wilson.
Among band and orchestra instruments the drum
shows the results of the most admirable evolution
within half a century. The drum of fifty years ago
was a comparatively crude affair that had exhibited
no improvements in construction for generations be-
fore. Even in the year 1887 drums were a great deal
different from what they are today. The particular
year is mentioned because that is the year in which
Tom Wilson, president of the Wilson Bros. Mfg. Co.,
Chicago, entered the business of manufacturing
drums.
Mr. Wilson began drum-making with ideals for the
perfection of the line art of drum making. Constant
devotion to those ideals.for thirty-five years has re-
sulted in the line of Wilson drums which the music
trade and music profession today appreciates. Mr.
Wilson entered the drum-making industry with the
idea that a drum should be something more than a
mere assemblage of portions of metal, wood and
skins.
From the start of his activities in his drum works,
Mr. Wilson realized the scientific requirements for
the ideal drum. The task involved a knowledge of
the laws of percussion and a mastery of construction
technic. The drum he had in mind was one which
would respond with the tones required in any kind of
musical rendition, tones soft and delicate, rolls sharp
and clear and rumblings like thunders.
What Mr. Wilson has accomplished is known to
musicians all over the world. But not all the ad-
mirers of his drums know how unceasingly he has
labored to accomplish the results.
His research
work in the field of tonal vibration and his expert
knowledge of technical construction have made every
one of his improvements steps in progress, authentic
and acceptable to the professional drummer.
In the factory at 218, 220 and 222 N. May street,
Chicago, Mr, Wilson has gathered about him a picked
force to which he has imparted his enthusiasms and
spirit of progress. So that when the drummer buys
a drum with the Wilson label on it he may be as-
sured he is getting a drum originally designed and
authentically built by America's foremost makers of
finest quality drums.
The Van Camp Varnish Co., 4476-86 East Seventy-
lirst street, Cleveland, O., is building an addition to
its big plant. In 1921 an addition doubling the capac-
ity of the plant was erected.

U K U L E L E FAVOR CONTINUES.
The ukulele continues a big seller in Salt Lake
City, Utah, although favor for the instrument has
somewhat waned in the states further west. But the
general opinion in the trade in the Utah city is that
the perpetual ukulele stimulation of E. S. Hughes,
manager of the musical merchandise department of
the O'Loughlin Music Co., is accountable for the
continued favor for the Hawaii instrument. A record
business in nkes for August is reported by Mr.
Hughes.
