SHEET MUSIC TRADE
TO PUBLISHERS

THE COMBINED CIRCULATION
OF PRESTO (EST. 1884), AND MUS-
ICAL TIMES (EST. 1881), IS BY FAR
THE LARGEST IN THE FIELD OF
THE MUSIC TRADE. COMBINA-
TION RATES OF SPECIAL AT-
TRACTIVENESS FOR ADVERTIS-
ING SPACE IN BOTH PAPERS
WILL BE MADE TO MUSIC PUB-
LISHERS.
This department is designed to advance the sales
of sheet music, and give any current information in
the Sheet Music Trade.
This publication believes that Sheet Music will
pay the dealer, just as any other commodity pays
those who merchandise it properly.
The conductor of this department will review
any numbers that are sent in for the purpose. It is
not the intent to criticise, but to review these offer-
ings, giving particular information of the theme and
a description of the musical setting of the number
discussed.
Address all communications to Conductor Sheet
Music Dept, Presto, 407 S. Dearborn, Chicago, 111.

TELLING THE WHY OF IT
The Sense of Nonsense Is Given as the Secret of
"No Bananas" Success.
A writer in The New York Times says that he
read with much pleasure an article on "Yes! We Have
No Bananas—and Why."
'"The many and varied theories given for the rea-
son of the song's pqpularity are most interesting. The
'why' of anything piques the curiosity of us all.
"To my mind the following is the one theory that
conies nearest solving the problem with fewer com-
plications: That is, the unconscious recognition of
real merit by the quality which we all possess, some
to a greater degree than others, the pure sense of
nonsense."
JACK MILLS' FALL CAMPAIGN.
At a recent conference of the department execu-
tives of Jack Mills, Inc., music publishers 148-50 West
46th street, New York, a fall policy was outlined and
it was decided that the firm would concentrate on
the following numbers: "Just a Girl that Men For-
get," the ballad sensation; "Hey! You Want Any
Codfish? (We Only Got Mack'rel Today)," contribu-
tion to the "food song" epidemic; "Love Is Just a
Flower" and "Havana," two Pacific Coast melody
hits, and "Mad." The Jack Mills catalog of "blues"
will also come in for a goodly share of exploitation,
as will the novelty piano, saxophone and banjo
editions and the "B-B" series of "beautiful ballads."

AUGUST SHEET MUSIC SALES
Sale of Small Instruments Holds Up Better During
the Summer Season Than Expected.
The Carl Fischer Co., 430 S. Wabash avenue, Chi-
cago, is doing a very active business in the sheet
music line this month. The latest song hits are much
sought for, and have converted a seemingly dull sum-
mer into one of activity.
The sale of small instruments of the Chicago
house has held up well, and is expected to increase
largely with the approach of the fall months.
The wholesale house of the Carl Fischer Co., in
New York City, has had a prosperous trade during
the summer months, according to the reports re-
ceived in Chicago this week. The report also states
that orders for the fall are coming in rapidly, and
the outlook for the immediate future is very promis-
ing.
ED. DEMOTTE WITH SCHIRMER.
The new Fifth Street store building in Los An-
geles, Cal., is under way and when completed will
be a splendid structure. During the building opera-
tions E. M. DeMotte manager of the Sheet Music
Department, is with the wholesale of G. Schirmer.
It is expected that the Fifth Street store will be in
its new building early in October, wTTen Mr. DeMotte
will again assume his old place.
RETURNED TO REMICK.
Frank Trever has returned as demonstrator to the
Portland, Ore., Remick Song & Gift Shop. Mr.
Trever was with the Earl Fuller jazz band of Chi-
cago. Mr. Trever has many friends in Portland,
who are glad to have him back.
