INNES MAY LIVE IN CHICAGO
Famous Director Left Denver, After Death of Wife,
to Establish School in East.
Frederick Neil Innes, the nationally famous di-
rector of the Innes band, of New York, and founder
of the Innes School of Music at Denver, Colo., ar-
rived in Chicago last week from the latter city in
hopes of establishing a music school in Chicago or
some city in the East, possibly New York or Boston.
Mr. Innes went to Denver, Colo., some 10 or 11
years ago on account of the serious illness of his
wife. He gave up the direction of his band, or rather
touring with his band, and established in Denver the
Innes School of Music.
The Innes school is reported to have students in
Australia, New Zealand, the different countries of
South America, Canada, So. Africa, England and
other countries of Europe.
Mr. Innes told a Presto man in Chicago this week
a story about the appreciation shown by a student

in China. This student, Mr. Innes said, was a mem-
ber of the marine band attached to the legation.
"Not long ago I received a letter from him," said
Mr. Innes, "enumerating the good points of my
course, and the different ways it had benefited him in
his work with the band. He also asked what he
could send to repay me. In my reply to him I
stated that he was paying for the course and that
was all I considered necessary. He was not satis-
fied, however, until he sent me a handsome present—
a large piece of Chinese embroidery of high value.
I have always highly prized this as a sincere appre-
ciation of my efforts to give my students the very
best music lessons to be had by correspondence."

GETS FAMOUS VIOLINS
Zimbalist Crosses Atlantic to Procure Stradivari
"Titian," Said to Be 200 Years Old.
Another of the world's famous violins has come to
Xew York, the "Titian," made by the master, Anton
Stradivari, in 1715, having been recently acquired by
Efrem Zimbalist, the violinist. The "Titian," so
called because of the bright red wood of which it
is made, is ranked by European experts as one of
the four finest in the world. It cost Zimbalist $33,-
000.
The three with which the "Titian" is linked are
the "Joachim," for sixty years the favorite instrument
of the master violinist whose name it bears, now
owned by one of his descendants, Herr Mendelssohn
of Berlin; the "Messiah," owned by Hill, the London
violin dealer, who has withdrawn it from sale, and
the "Alard," owned by a Scottish family. Like them,
too, the "Titian" has a pedigree and a history.

HOW RECORDS ARE MADE
The Making of a Disc from Artist's Rendition to a
Fine Reproduction.
FROM THE BIGGEST
ORCHESTRION
The Cable Co., Wabash avenue and Jackson boule-
vard, Chicago, has a unique window display this
week, illustrating how records are reproduced. The
perfect reproduction of the beauty and the personal-
ity of tone which is the genius of the world's great-
est artist, requires the utmost care and accuracy of
scientist and expert workman in the series of dif-
ficult processes.
Wax disc which is engraved by sound waves
created by the voice of the artist vibrating the re-
corder is covered with graphite dust, immersed in
an electroplating copper bath, which forms the mas-
ter record. This is also electroplated, but this time
with steel and the disc thus formed is known as i
matrix or stamper, which is used to form and press
the record stock composed of ingredients gathered
from the ends of the earth.
