and folders and files to be checked; it was all a tre-

up and waited, and waited—and went on waiting.
SYSTEM SEASONED WITH
COMMON SENSE IS GOOD
But When Permitted to Run Wild and Domi-
nate the Office It Is a Poor Investment
to Any Business House.
The much discussed word terms "Service" and
"System" are the twin topics of most dreamers in
the world of industrial economics at this time. Both
have been very largely overworked, but, this fact
notwithstanding, boht have a very distinct and seri-
ous bearing upon the success of any business enter-
prise. This applies to the music trade, as to all
others, especially the sheet music and small goods
ends in taking care of stock. In the piano business
the system applies to the keeping track of prospects,
and the saleman in line for results. And there sys-
tem is of the utmost value. All this notwithstanding,
also, there is a lot of common sense in the following
article by Louis Hill, which appeared in "Roycroft,"
the little booster magazine of East Aurora, N. Y.:
"He waxed enthusiastic* over systems. They were
the breath of life to him. His ingenuous brain was
forever producing wonderful new methods whereby
efficiency might be increased. He talked system. He
exuded efficiency from every pore. His desk was
always clear of papers. They were all carefully filed
in endless numbered folders ranged in geometrically
accurate rows along a table. He adorned the walls
above his desk with lists of things he intended doing,
had done, and was doing. The idea being that you
crossed each item off as soon as accomplished, and
having erased one item you made out a fresh list so
that you were always up-to-date and neat. His pen-
cils and pens lay in parallel lines with his ruler and
scissors. His paste-pot occupied a position to lee-
ward of the inkstand, and that position was perma-
nent. It was all part of his perfect system to have
everything just so. He drew up wonderful schemes
and kept countless neatly-ruled notebooks. Memo-
randums and schedules and lists; schemes and wire-
baskets and card-indexes; every device for keeping
the office tidy and the desk clear; every possible
method of recording business activities; he discovered
and invented and utilized.
"But, do you know, despite all this specialization
in system he could never get the work out on time?
It took him all his time to keep his systems in order.
"You see there were memos to be kept up-to-date;
lists and schedules to be constantly revised; indexes
"And the moral of all this is that it is possible to
over-systematize business.
. "It's no use trying to make the office look like a
drawing-roonl. Keep it as pleasant and cheery as
you can, but don't forget that fundamentally it's a
workroom; it's meant to be used.
"System is all a matter of common sense—a mat-
ter of putting things w r hcre you will be able to find
them—and quickly.
"It doesn't require a complicated paraphernalia of
notebooks and memos to keep a clear record of work.
"Work systematically, but don't overburned your-
self with system. A surfeit of anything is as bad as
an insufficiency."
