Lieut. William H. Santelman to Pick Winners in
Tournament During Convention Week.
Lieutenant William H. Santelman, leader of the
United States Marine Band at Washington, will be
the chief judge in the national school band tourna-
ment to be held in Chicago during convention week
at the Drake Hotel. He will have other judges
assist him, hut he will be the court of last resort in
deciding the winners. Six thousand dollars in prizes
will he awarded to the successful bands. The com-
petition will take place in Grant Park.
In a letter received by Patrick Henry recently
Lieut. Santelman said:
1 consider the Schools Band Contest, which is to
be held under the auspices of the Music Industries
Chamber of Commerce of the United States in Chi-
.:a;^o ihe first week of June, a very commendable
move fnr the encourage ment of military band music.'
T am sorry, however, that the affair just happened to
come dur'ng the week when the Shriners are holding
their convention in this city, but, owing to its un-
questionable importance, of the influence in further-
ing and encouraging the efforts made by the schools
throughout the country to make music a major sub-
ject in their curriculum, I consider it a duty to
forego-the pleasure of seeing the greatest gathering
of people Washington has ever witnessed and accept
your invitation to act as a judge in your contest.
- I do not as yet know the exact itinerary, but I
suppose arriving in Chicago the evening of June 3rd
will he amp'c time.
