OLD TIMBER FOR VIOLINS
Aztec Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico Said to Be
Source of Raw Material.
Valuable violins are being manufactured from
wood taken from the ruins of the cliff dwellers near
Aztec, N. M., says the Boston Traveler.
While excavating recently Carl Morris, research
investigator for the Smithsonian Institution, found a
investigator for the Smithsonian Institute, found a
number of perfectly preserved timbers which are be-
lieved to have been used in constructing the homes of
the dwellers.
The timbers were estimated to be over 1,000 years
old, and, due to the dry, hot climate that prevails in
the vicinity of the ruins, the wood has become so
well seasoned that high-class violins are being made
from it which have a tone, it is said, equal to that of
an instrument that has been in use for a number of
years.
TEST FOR EDUCATOR ROLLS
John Martin, Playerpiano Dealer and Expert Opera-
tor, Cites an Instance of Illuminating Value.
John and M. F. Martin, 734 S. Hill street, Los
Angeles, Calif., in a letter to the Q R S Music Co.,
Chicago, recites an experience which should prove of
great suggestive value to every dealer ambitious to
make his playerpiano department a success. The
Los Angeles company named is distributor for the
Gulbransen-Dickinson Co.'s line of playerpianos and
the letter to the Q R S Music Co. was signed by
John Martin, whose name will be recognized as an
authority on playerpiano operation:
Gentlemen: We had an experience recently
wherein your "Educator Rolls" were directly respon-
sible for our making a player sale. The customer, a
business man, refused absolutely to consider a player
on the ground that his little daughter would not take
the necessary interest in learning to play the piano
by hand.
This was one of the very best opportunities we
could ever have to test the real merits of the "Edu-
cator Rolls," for this sale seemed next to impossible.
We immediately presented the "Educator Rolls" as
the highest authority and most valuable assistance
he could employ in starting his little daughter on
correct principles, so as she advanced she would never
have to be told by her finished professors that she
had been taught wrong principles, and would have to
start all over again practically. I'f he never used the
player for any other purpose he could not help seeing
advantages that would warrant the investment.
Of course, all the time he was quite naturally think-
ing of the fun he would have with the player, and
seemed to welcome quite heartily the demonstration
of the "Educator Rolls." When he left our store, he
was completely convinced that he had made a wise
investment. Thanks to the "Educator Rolls" in this
instance, for they turned the trick.
We are sure you would like to know how much
good they are doing, although to us it seems that the
dealers and player manufacturers will reap more
direct profit from them than you will.
We have hung the Number One roll up in our

player parlors to invite questions pertaining to them.
We believe firmly in them as a big selling argument.
We are ashamed to admit it, but up to that time
we had had the "Educator Rolls" on our shelves and
only referred to them. In fact, we did not really
know what was in them. No doubt many dealers are
doing the same thing. It is a question of waking up
to our opportunities.
We would like to have a dozen extra rolls of the
Number One put up in strong boxes for our sales-
men to carry with them in their cars. Will you fix
them up for us?
