VALUABLE LABORATORY COURSE
Men from the Various Industries Take Advantage
of Opportunities at Madison, Wis.
Better methods of kiln drying, gluing, boxing and
crating and other activities associated with the using
of wood have been shown in the courses given by the
Forests Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis., since
their introduction about five years ago. Five hundred
and thirty-two men from the various industries have
taken advantage of the courses. The most popular
course is that of kiln drying in which there was a
total enrollment of 326 up to the end of the last
course. Thirty-nine men, some of whom represented
the piano industry, enrolled in the classes in gluing.
An equally important course is that of boxing and
crating in which practical experiments in the box
laboratory show the power of resistance to pressure
and shock under ordinary shipping conditions of the
various styles of boxes and crates.
The relative
strength of straps, bindings and different methods of
nailing are determined by experiments. It was shown
in the recent course that the production of boxes
and crates for export uses involved the knowledge
of the moisture content in the woods employed. It
is necessary that boxes for South America, for in-
stance, should be made from lumber seasoned in ac-
cordance with the atmospheric conditions to be en-
countered en route.
The kiln drying courses are very comprehensive
at the Forests Products Laboratory. Knowledge of
woods, their structure; determining the moisture
content, causes of warping, case-hardening and de-
cay; effects of kiln-drying and the management of
humidity control apparatus are subjects included in
the kiln-drying courses.
The courses in gluing are certain to be attended
by piano factory men in greater numbers in the
future. The courses are very valuable and include
demonstrations in the mixing of glues and their ac-
tual application under various conditions. The knowl-
edge of glues, the resistance of glues, the effects of
pressure, temperature and humidity on glues of all
kinds are topics included in the course. The next
course will begin May 14.
RIGHT TO COUE NAME DISPUTED.
The Columbia Graphophone Co. recently appeared
before Judge Erlanger in the Supreme Court, New
York, with an application to enjoin the Coue Sys-
tem, Inc., against using the word "Coue" or picture
of Coue in any autosuggestion records the latter
company may present for sale. It was stated that the
principles of autosuggestion were incorporated for
four records by Emile Coue for the Columbia Graph-
ophone Co. before his return to France and thereby,
it was maintained, the company is specially privileged
to use the name Coue in association with autosug-
gestion records.
NOTED INSTRUCTOR ENGAGED.
Milton Foy, a noted band instructor of Chicago,
has been employed by the Conn Service School of
Music as a member of the teaching staff which is
proving to be a worth-while adjunct of the Conn Chi-
cago Co., retail branch of C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elk-
hart. Ind. The school has rented space in the Athe-
naeum Building, 59 East Van Buren street, Chicago,
and is prepared to handle a large number of pupils
for the Conn Chicago Co. Mr. Foy has a band
library which is one of the largest in the country.
CHANGE IN OIL CITY, PA.
The Shaffer Music House, Oil City, Pa., of which
C. C. Shaffer is proprietor and manager, has pur-
chased the local Victor agency from Delahoyde &
Wuller. Negotiations have been under way for some
time and during that time Mr. Shaffer has been mak-
ing plans to accommodate this increase to his business
by making enlargements and alterations to his store
on Seneca street. Part of these is the installation of
five new service booths.
BUYS WILLIMANTIC BUSINESS.
Following the death of James Harries recently, the
James Harries Music & Stationery Store, Williman-
tic, Conn., of which he was the proprietor, was sold
to the Willimantic Art Store owned by Russell W.
Potter. Mr. Harries had reached the age of seventy
years and had carried on his business at 801 Main
street, for a great number of years. Mr. Potter will
keep the two stores distinct for the present.
