OLD FIDDLE VERSUS NEW
Interesting Tests Between Modern Instruments and
Old Masters Planned in London, Eng.
The Stradivarius, the Guarnerius and other classic
Italian-made violins will be given an opportunity to
demonstrate whether they possess tonal qualities
superior to violins of modern make at a novel recital
in London next week, according to the correspondent
of the Boston Transcript.
Behind a screen Albert Hammons will play selec-
tions on both old masters and modern "fiddles." The
public will sit as jurors. A similar experiment in
Paris two years ago resulted in a verdict for twentieth
century instruments. The forthcoming trial is the
idea of W. W. Corbett, English music patron.
Some musicians contend that the values attached
to many old violins are fantastic and due principally
to the mere fact of their antiquity. Others hold that
violins made nowadays "deaden" within ten years, no
matter how brilliantly toned they may be when brand
new.
0 R S PLAYER ROLL CABINET
Distinctive Specialty Which Must Interest
Dealers and Owners of Instruments.
All
The Q R S Music Company, Chicago, has pro-
duced a specialty in which there are good opportuni-
ties for retail piano dealers. It is something at once
convenient and ornamental. The Q R S Player Roll
Cabinet is a quality product, and is so devised and
constructed as to afford the neatest possible recept-
acle for the music rolls whether in music stores or
private parlors.
In a beautifully printed three-colored descriptive
folder, the Q R S Player Roll Cabinet is described
as being "typical of the distinctive quality that mani-
fests itself in all Q R S products. Made of 5-ply
genuine mahogany veneer. Standard varnish finish,
hand rubbed either in dull brown or red mahogany.
These cabinets make an artistic addition to the music
or living room as furniture in addition to being the
only proper receptacle for the care of player rolls."
The Console Style is especially artistic. It has a
series of shelves., the two lower ones being so spaced
as to hold the larger sized rolls. The descriptive
folder also refers to the original Q R S feature of
labeling the rolls on both ends. The cabinet shows
again the advantages of this method. Further the
folder says: "Each Q R S Cabinet will contain a
sample Q R S Box illustrating the idea of double
labeling, and will serve as a guide in labeling such
Q R S Rolls the purchaser may now have, as we
will furnish gratis, labels' for any Q R S Rolls that
are not labeled the new Q R S way."
It would be impossible to think of a specialty in
which there is a better combination of the decorative
and the useful than in these cabinets. All wide-awake
dealers will want to know about them and to,carry
them on stock. They certainly are deserving of
Q R S reputation and should have a large sale.
