A NEW YORK CHARACTER.
One of the beloved figures of New York's east side
is Charles B. Lawler, who wrote "The Sidewalks of
New York," the song whose homely words and rol-
licking melody have become as much of an institution
as Brooklyn bridge. You remember, of course:
'East side, west side, all around the town,
Tots play "Ringarosy," "London Bridge Is Falling
Down."
Boy and girl together, me and Mamie O'Rourke,
Trip the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New
York."
Lawler was born in the shadow of the Brooklyn
bridge. Today he is 70, and totally blind. He was
once a vaudeville actor—a figure at Tony Pastor's.
His song won nation-wide popularity. It is said that
more than a million copies were sold, but Lawler
received only $4,800 in royalties.
