PROBLEM IN LEATHER SUPPLY
Shortage in Goatskins Worry Tanners Who Make
Leathers for Music Industry.
The supply of goatskins is inadequate for the re-
quirements of American tanners who make leathers
suitable for piano manufacturers and other producers
of musical goods. The goatskin tanners in the Unit-
ed States in some ways occupy a unique position in
the tanning industry of the world, says Wilbur J.
Page, chief of the leather division of the Department
of Commerce, who says the production of goatskins
in the United States is almost negligible. In 1922 the
supply available was approximately 44,000,000 skins,
of which 99 9-10 per cent represents imports.
The chief problem which faces this industry is an
increase, says Mr. Page, and diversified supply of
raw goatskins. Particularly has this become neces-
sary since the imposition of IS per cent export duty
on Indian goatskins.
THE RUBBER SUPPLY.
'Harvey S. Firestone, automobile tire manufacturer,
was in Washington, D. C, last week in an attempt to
interest federal officials and members of Congress
in measures to enlarge and protect the American
supply of crude rubber by efforts "to further cement
our close relations with the South American repub-
lics," and through development in the Philippines.
Mr. Firestone declared that 85 per cent of the
world's crude rubber production was controlled by
British capital, while 70 per cent of it was consumed
in the United States. The British, through legisla-
tion, he said, have restricted the 1923 crude rubber
output.

ACTIVE COLUMBIA ROLL DEMAND.
One of the best possible proofs of trade activity
may be seen in the demand for player music rolls.
Just now it is reported at the offices of the Columbia
Music Roll Company, Chicago, that conditions are
very good. The demand for the late Columbia offer-
21
ings, both for pneumatic and electric pianos, is very
active. The industry anticipates that the present year
is going to be a good one from every standpoint.
Dealers will find it to their advantage to keep in-
formed of the new monthly Columbia offerings.
REID LOVED SAXOPHONE MUSIC.
"Wallace Reid, the movie actor, died with the echo
of the music he loved, a saxophone solo, in his ears,"
according to one newspaper report of the circum-
stances connected with his death. "Confident of
victory in his fight against death, he chatted with
Teddy Hayes, his physical trainer, less than twenty-
four hours before his death. He asked for two
favorite saxophone selections, and Teddy played them
for him."
