CHARGES FOR SHIPPING
TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES
Current Ocean Rates from United States and Euro-
pean and South American Ports.
Comparisons of current ocean freight rates on a
few of the leading commodities from New York, the
United Kingdom, and Hamburg, have appeared in
Commerce. Reports. Similar rate tables will be pub-
lished from time to time, in order to assist the Amer-
ican exporter in determining how his transportation
costs compare with those of his British and German
competitors.
The freight rates given are market quotations of
conference lines, as of December 15 from New York,
November 15 from the United Kingdom, and Decem-
ber 1 from Hamburg.
It must be borne in mind that in the present un-
stable condition of the freight market lower rates
are frequently obtainable. Before closing a contract
it is advisable to consult a reliable shipping or
freight forwarding company to secure a firm rate.
The New York rates for general merchandise are:
Per 1,000 kilos weight per cubic meter measure—
Buenos Aires, $20; Sydney, $20-$25; Bombay, $16;
Yokohama, $20; Hamburg, $37; London, $30-$60.
The rates from Hamburg, as of December 1,
1922, to the South American and Far Eastern ports
were quoted in -pounds sterling and converted at
$4.51. The remaining rates were quoted in dollars.
It might be noted that the ocean freight rates from
Hamburg are still on a gold basis and do not vary
from week to week, as do internal prices in Germany.

PIANOS
The policy of the Williams House is and always
has been to depend upon excellence of product
instead of alluring price. Such a policy does not
attract bargain hunters. It does, however, win the
hearty approval and support of a very desirable
and substantial patronage.
