AUTHORITIES IN KEARNEY,
NEB., WANT S. B. PROUT
Krancer Piano House, Lincoln, Neb., Biggest Losers
from His Alleged Sharp Practices.
A number of Kearney, Neb., merchants are asking
the whereabouts of S. B. Prout, head of the Prout
Piano House which has operated in Kearney for
several months in several locations.
The Krancer Piano House, of Lincoln, Neb., is
asking the same question and has sworn out a war-
rant for Prout's arrest, he having left the country
after depositing some bogus consignment notes with
Krancer, according to the allegations printed in the
Kearney Hub.
Prout's story, told by the newspaper named, is as
follows: After a fairly successful season as a piano
salesman in North Platte, Prout decided to venture
in Kearney on a larger scale and approached the
Krancer firm in Lincoln, a well established and rep-
utable house.
He persuaded them to ship him two carloads of
pianos and other musical instruments on consign-
ment. It was agreed that whenever a cash sale was
made a remittance should be made to Krancer and
that when a time payment sale was closed the pur-
chaser's notes should be sent to Krancer and the
commission paid to Prout by the Krancer concern,
which took the risk of carrying the notes.
Prout sold several pianos on time, taking notes
which he discounted in Kearney banks, it is alleged.
He .then sent bogus notes to Krancer. When the
time for payment came the Krancer company dis-
covered the alleged trick and sent representatives to
Kearney, only to find that the bird had flown, so they
report.
A long trail of bad checks has been left, Prout
promising continually to make them good. He was
once arrested and fined on a bad check charge in
Grand Island.
Of Prout's personal history little is known other
than that his divorced wife is a resident of Omaha
and would also like to know his whereabouts in order
to adjust a matter of seventy-five dollars.
When Prout first arrived in Kearney he was ac-
companied by a young man who was known, it is
claimed, under several aliases, and who departed the
city in possession of an automobile which he "rented
from a local garage, not having been heard of in
several months.
