PLAYER PRODUCTION
Instructive Article by A. G. Gulbransen Tells
How Great Ends Were Attained in
Industry of Which He Is the Head.
The January number of "System" contains an il-
lustrated article on "How We Got Both Quality and
Volume Production," by the president of the Gul-
bransen-Dickinson Company, of Chicago. Mr. Gul-
bransen takes, for the basis of his subject, the new
machinery and factory methods which have been in-
troduced into the great industry founded by his own
skill and perseverence. Beginning with the founda-
tion of his industry, Mr. Gulbransen says that, while
the selling energies have not been neglected, the
principal aim has been to reduce cost of manufacture
by means of advanced ideas without affecting quality
in any degree. He bears upon the simplification of
mechanism in keeping the styles, or models, of in
struments within such bounds as to permit of rapid
and unimpaired duplication of parts.
"From the beginning we manufactured and sold a
simplified line as well as a simplified mechanism,"
says Mr. Gulbransen. And the methods by which the
simplification has been attained is told in clearly ex-
pressed sentences. "Ours is a craftsmanship prod-
uct," he says, "it requires skill of the highest order to
turn out instruments of the grade we manufacture.
It is not an easy matter to combine the manufacture
of a high quality product with production and low
cost."
Mr. Gulbransen tells of some of the processes of
manufacture, and describes some of the novel ma-
chinery by which results are made possible; touches
upon the "nationally priced" system of selling and
describes the system of just four styles of instru-
ments, by which the trade has been enabled to secure
prompt service, and with which the public has been
made familiar. The article is well illustrated with
half-tones from photographs taken in the Gulbran-
sen-Dickinson factory.
