Veteran Tuner Believes That the Majority of Deal-
ers Are Indifferent in That Respect.
How many dealers systematically endeavor to
build up a tuning connection? The question was
asked recently at a meeting to establish a branch of
the National Piano Tuners' Association in St. Paul,
Minnesota.
The excellent bits of advice for retail piano dealers
voiced at the meeting were, "develop your player
music roll department" and "extend your piano
tuning connection." It seems the obvious course
for the piano dealer to keep track of the piano when
he sells it. But according to a veteran tuner present
the obvious fact is disregarded in too many in-
stances. It is a case of out of sight ,out of mind.
"When the piano dealer does not follow up the
tuning opportunities afforded by the sales other
firms and unattached tuners eventually get them,"
said the veteran tuner alluded to. "The proper time
to catch a tuning client is when he buys the piano.
There may or may not be a period of free tunings,
but anyway the best time to catch your tuning client
is when he pays the first payment. The bigger the
tuning connections become the greater are the
opportunities for new sales."
The veteran tuner suggested an appropriate bit
of advice for the dealer who has the proper appre-
ciation for the tuning connection. It is, "watch out
for the interests of your tuning contract clients."
He said that all piano firms were more or less in the
hands of their tuners and consequently care and
supervision of the work is always necessary.
"A most dangerous type of man is he who, what-
ever his abilities as a tuner may be, presumes on the
innocence of the customers to give them slight serv-
ice. Inevitably complaints will arise, and inevitably
the number of contract clients will drop off."
FOLLOW THE CROWD.
That it pays to follow the crowd is the belief
laid down for shoppers by the St. Joseph, Mo.,
branch of the J. W. Jenkins Sons' Music Co. this
week. This is said: "When people patronize a
certain concern to a marked degree there is always
a reason. For over forty years the J. W. Jenkins
Sons' Music Company has sold pianos and musical
instruments to the people of the Southwest, and
the people now go to Jenkins'. The Jenkins Sons'
Music Company has only one price on an article.
When you buy a piano from Jenkins' you can knew
that no one is being paid a commission on the sale.
The J. W. Jenkins Sons' Music Company buys in
quantity for thirteen stores and pays instant cash
for the goods. Consequently they can sell better
goods for less money."
QUOTES THE ARTIST.
Ludden & Bates, Atlanta, Ga., quotes Charles
Hackett, the American tenor who alluded to the
Chickering piano as "the pianos of all pianos." The
singer used the instrument for accompaniments at
his concert in the Auditorium recently. Speaking
of the Chickering in a newspaper display the At-
lanta firm said: "The very name of the word Chick-
ering suggests the sturdiness of a house of musical
genius and craftsmanship, dating back to the work-
shop in which Jonas Chickering made his first piano.
You will find that your ambition to possess a Chick-
ering will not be discouraged by any undue strin-
gency of our terms."
SPEAKS FOR PACKARD.
Hon. "W. H. Lyman & Co., Kawanee, 111., con-
veys good selling points for the Packard piano and
does so in a brief paragraph in the newspapers as
shown in the following clipped from a Kawanee
newspaper: "This is a particularly opportune time
to select a Packard piano. Come to our store and
learn the unsual charm of its tone, the accuracy of
its action adjustment and observe its graceful sym-
metry of design. You will want to give it proud
place in your home. The price is not prohibitive.
Make a point of hearing the Packard this week."
A FINE LINE.
Bailey's Music Rooms, Burlington, Vt, points
to the experiences of forty years in leadership in
pianos in that city. The range of makes and styles
shown in the handsome music rooms on College
street, is an indication of a wise choice for every
requirement of the buyer of pianos or playerpianos.
The list includes the Mason & Hamlin, Knabe,
Henry F. Miller, Kingsbury, Wellington, Kohler &
Campbell and others. The house has a fine busi-
ness in Inner-Players, made by The Cable Company,
Chicago.
The transposing device in the Symphonola is fea-
tured this week by Benjamin's, Danville, 111.
