Thos. A. Edison, Inc., has offered a prize of $500
for the most meritorious research on the effects of
music submitted to the American Psychological As-
sociation before June 1, 1921.
The offer of this prize was prompted by the de-
sire of Mr. Edison and his associates to direct atten-
tion toward the importance of research in the psy-
chology of music. There is today, it is pointed out,
too little scientific understanding of the effects pro-
duced by different kinds of music on hearers of vary-
ing degrees of training, etc.
The following topics are suggested as suitable, but
the choice of subject is not limited to this list. The
Committee will welcome any research bearing di-
rectly on the nature of music and the way it in-
fluences people:
Classification of musical selections according to
their psychological effects.
Individual differences in musical sensitivity.
Types of listeners.
Validity of introspection in studying affective re-
sponses to music.
Modification of moods by music.
Effects of familiarity and repetition: Emotional
durability of various types of selections.
Effects of contrasting types of music on muscular
activity.
Other objective (physiological) measurements of
effects of musical stimuli.
An experimental study of music as an aid in syn-
chronizing routine factory operations.
Researches brought to completion during 1 the pres-
ent academic year may be submitted in competition
for the prize.
Manuscripts may be sent at any time before May
31, 1921, to W. V. Bingham, Carnegie Institute of
Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa., who will transmit them,
without the names of the authors, to the members of
the Committee of Award, to be designated by the
American Psychological Association. Manuscripts
should be submitted in form for publication.

presidency of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce
is in recognition of the ability and interest he has
displayed in municipal, agricultural and industrial
affairs of the state.
R. D. Gaston has been in the musk business in
Hastings for the past 17 years and has been very
successful. He is president of the Gaston Music
Co., with stores at Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney
and Red Cloud. Various lines of musical merchan-
dise are handled, among which are the Gulbransen
playerpiano.
Recently the Gaston Music Co. bought over a
three-story an dbasement building at Hastings, which
will be their future home. It is now being remod-
eled, and when completed will be one of the largest
and most magnificent music stores in the West. They
expect to occupy the new premises about February
first.
The many friends of "R. D." in the music in-
dustry will, no doubt, be interested to hear of
the honors that have come to him and incidently to
the piano industry.
