PRESTO
were blue with copy-afters, each trying to get into
the lime-light on the tail of the original number's
kite. We counted twelve "blue" numbers in a sin-
gle theatrical journal.
Then, in this five years, rag-time has given way
to Jazz. Wheth.er the new discovery is an improve-
ment or a degeneration of musical accomplishment
is a question for deep study. Also, it opens worlds
of possibility to the investigator, to find if possible
the exact line of demarkation. When is Rag-time
Jazz or when is Jazz not Rag-time seems fraught
with possibilities.
Bushels and bales of "copy" has been written
about the decline of Jazz. "Jazz has been banned
by many hotels," said the Detroit Journal. "Jazz
is dead; long live rag-time," cried the Albany Argus.
And not wishing to be outdone by any writing per-
son, I make haste to write the epitaph—premature,
perhaps, but no one may strike the psychological
moment exactly, therefor this—
EPITAPH TO JAZZ.
'.The five-year-old infant, Jazz, god-fathered by
Hit-Publisher, being the illegitimate issue of Music,
and the legitimate issue of Rag-time, is said to be
dying out.
We are glad that you have lived that we may
know hereafter how to appreciate music when we
hear it once again.
Rest in peace—the only peaceful thing you ever
did,
. Nothing in your life ever became you half so well
as your leaving it.
On with the dance; may joy be unconfined.
He passed this way but once—
July 31, 1920.
That was enough—
You're where you should be, you ill-begotten mu-
sical monstrosity.
You're dead—
'Nough said!
Just paste this in your show-case and wait. You
may be compelled to wait a long time, but there is
nothing like being prepared. It is always conve-
nient to have an epitaph on hand when one is
wanted.
LIVE LOS ANGELES HOUSE
Churchill, Young & Co. Enlarge and Add a Com-
plete Sheet Music Department.
Churchill, Young & Co., 218 South Broadway, Los
Angeles, Calif., have been busy in getting things
straightened up to start business on a larger scale.
They have added new departments and are now in
a position to handle anything in the music line. They
now do composing, arranging, printing and publish-
ing songs for others. They also have a "plugging"
service, and make slides, as well.
The Los Angeles house wrote Presto some time
ago that it was the intention to represent some of
the eastern music publishers, so as to sell the latest
"hits." They are now representing 14 music pub-
lishers, and many of them will use Churchill, Young
& Co.'s name in their advertisements, on their cir-
culars and other literature as their western repre-
sentatives. For some of them the Los Angeles firm
has taken over the entire business in the West. The
list of publishers represented by the Los Angeles
house is as follows, and the prints of any of them
may be had by ordering of Churchill, Young & Co.:
New York: Jones Music Co.; Pace & Hendy, Inc.;
Triangle Music Pub. Co.; Belwin, Inc.; Jack Mills,
Inc.; Chas. K. Harris.
Chicago: Will Rossiter; Van Alstyne & Curtis;
McKinley Music Co.
Brooklyn, N. Y.: Chas. H. Hochberg & Co.; Ar-
cadia Music Pub. Co.
Akron, Ohio: Success Music Co.
North Fond du Lac, Wis.: Earl E. Zech.
Quincy, 111.: C. Arthur Fifer.
W. T. BRINKERHOFF IN NORTH.
Will T. Brinkerhoff, president of the Brinkerhoff
Piano Company, Chicago, is enjoying his vacation
in and around Hackensack, Minn. He has sent
home 25 pounds of pickerel already and more will
follow as soon as he makes further catches. He is
accompanied by R. D. Gaston, the Brinkerhoff deal-
er from Hastings, Neb. Mrs. Brinkerhoff and Mrs.
Gaston went to these northlands with their hus-
bands. It is understood that p'art of the time is
spent in playing golf.
DISSOLVE PARTNERSHIP.
R. R. Roath and H. A. Britton, of the Britton-
Roath Piano Co., Decatur, 111., have dissolved part-
nership. Mr. Roath will devote all his time to the
sale of pianos as he has for many years, covering a
wide territory. Mr. Britton will continue in business
under the name of Britton Piano Co.
