MUSIC ART AIDED BY
PATH AND THE PHONOGRAPH
Part the Invention of Edison has Done to Enrich
Modern Music Life.
Those who were fortunate enough to hear her
in her prime insist that Adelina Patti was the great-
est of all coloratura sopranos. Certainly she was a
very great one. Range, flexibility, brilliancy and
that center-of-the-note sureness that makes the lis-
tener settle back in his seat with confident delight;
Patti had them all.
The death of Patti reminded us once more of
the debt which we owe to the inventor and per-
fectors of devices for reproducing the sound of the
human voice. They did not come soon enough to
record her voice in its full glory, but that they
caught it at all is something to be thankful for, and
think of the other treasures they have preserved
for us!
No single invention has done more than this to
enrich modern life. Tarnagno is dead, but we can
still hear him in Othello's farewell as he sang it
when, in the words of a gifted Chicago writer, "he
came down to the footlights with a note between
his teeth and opened it out like an umbrella." Pol
Plancon is dead; but at trifling cost we can hear the
mocking laughter of his Mephisto serenade, the
velvety softness of his Christmas hymn, the martial
ring of his "Two Grenadiers." Strange, nay, in-
credible, as it seems now, there will come a time
when Galli Curci's voice has lost something of its
vibrant freshness. When that day—may it be dis-
tant—arrives, the world can still revel in the haunt-
ing melody of "Solveg's Song," and the plaintive
beauty of "La Partida," and marvel at the incom-
parable perfection of her "Lucia."
Canned music? You might as well call books
canned literature. The phonograph in its various
and many named forms is the greatest aid to mu-
sical understanding and appreciation that the world
has ever known.
