AMOA responds to
Operation Choke
Point ending
Last month, the Department of Justice announced that it
would officially end Operation Choke Point. Just days after
several House Republicans had pushed Attorney General Jeff
Sessions to close the program, the DOJ formally responded.
In a letter calling the program a “misguided initiative,” the
Department’s response said, “All of the department’s bank
investigations conducted as part of Operation Choke Point
are now over; the initiative is no longer in effect, and it will
not be undertaken again.”
For the last year or so, the Amusement and Music Opera-
tors Association has pressured Washington to end the program
through visits to Capitol Hill and calling on AMOA members
affected by Operation Choke Point to share their stories.
In a “Legislative Alert” sent my email to members, the
AMOA said, “Over the last 18 months, many of our mem-
bers found themselves victim to the government overreach.
Through AMOA’s legislative advocacy efforts, led by D.C.-
based Dentons, AMOA was represented by two member
witnesses at a round table discussion with Representatives
Goodlatte, Luetkemeyer, and Issa back on June 22 to share
the very recent and continuing negative impact the over-
reach had placed on their businesses.”
AMOA continued, “While Friday’s announcement provid-
ed an opportunity to pause for a momen-
tary sigh of relief, AMOA now calls upon
bank regulators, across the country to
heed the DOJ’s guidance and work with
legitimate cash businesses to ensure
access to banking services.”
AMOA also thanked those members
who sent in their stories. “It was quite
impactful when AMOA’s Government
Relations Committee Chair Emily Dunn
and Executive Vice President Lori
Schneider handed a thick packet of
information to key congressional offices,”
the alert said. “This information is what
ultimately provided AMOA a seat at the
round table with top congressional lead-
ers on June 22.”
AMOA says that it will continue to
work with members of Congress to
“ensure the spirit and letter of the DOJ.’s
action is adhered to by banks across the
country. Our members deserve no less.”
