COIN-OP NEWS
Non-profit founded in
memory of Allen Duke
Two days after celebrating his 23rd birthday, Allen
Duke, son of long-time industry vet Brian Duke and his
wife, Emi, was struck and killed by an SUV while walking
to work in Durango, Colorado, on March 18. This month,
the Allen Duke Memorial Foundation was established to
honor his dedication to volunteerism.
“That’s exactly why we established The Allen Duke
Memorial Foundation as a non-profit 501(c)(3) registered
service organization,” said Brian, who volunteers as pres-
ident of the foundation. “We were all determined that
Allen would at least live on in the hearts and minds of
others through our charity by continuing his journey of
helping others.”
The ADMF is an all-volunteer effort by its entire board
and officers, which includes Emi, Allen’s roommate, and
a classmate. This makes all funds from donors completely
tax deductible so that every penny goes directly to dona-
tions.
The foundation is currently working with Fort Lewis
College, where Allen earned a posthumous degree in
accounting, to help students pay for the Certified Public
Accountants exam, establish networking career days, and
to build the Allen Duke Tutoring Center.
Allen was only five weeks away from gradating when
he was killed, but the college decided to honor him with
a degree. During the commencement ceremony in April,
his parents learned that Allen had been volunteering his
spare time as a tutor.
“Our son was never one to call attention to himself,
especially when it was something that he was doing to
help another person,” Brian said. “So, we were not aware
at all. In fact, I remember talking with Allen his sopho-
more year about some poor grades he received, and we
advised him to get assistance from teachers or a tutor.”
However, the college didn’t offer a tutoring program
and besides, Allen confessed, “that’s a sign of weakness.”
His father protested: “Weakness is when you need help
and you’re too proud to ask for it.” Allen heeded his
father’s advice and joined a study group. He soon began
to excel at his studies.
Allen’s family is hoping that once the tutoring center
is finally built, it will help guide other students who might
be too proud to ask for help. For now, the foundation’s
website (www.allendukefoundation.com) is collecting
donations. The website also features other projects creat-
ed in Allen’s name. For more information, Brian can be
