hen I began working at Play Meter in 1985, we used
IBM Selectric typewriters (the ones with the moving
typeball) and did things the old fashioned way: choosing
trade show photos from contact sheets (in black and white
no less), gathering information mainly by phone, sending documents by regu-
lar mail and express services, laying out the articles in strips of printed type
with a wax backing, and reviewing blue lines (proofs) of the next issue at the
pre-press studio.
So much has changed, and yet some things remain the same. Then and
now, the Directory that you currently hold in your hand has always been a
monumental task requiring untold man hours needed to verify information.
In a perfect world, every company would respond
quickly to an inquiry to update their free listing.
But it’s not a perfect world and responses don’t
come quickly; sometimes they never come.
We want to hear
from you about any
of the articles in this
issue or topics
you’d like to see.
So we are on the phone calling, faxing, e-
mailing, checking Web sites, and doing our
best to determine the most current details
on each company.

Long ago, we updated the Play Meter
Directory format with a simple complete A-Z
alphabetical listing of companies, no matter the cate-
gory. To search by category, go to the main classifications: Manufacturers,
Distributors, Support/Supply, and Shows/Associations/Leagues. You are sure
to find what you seek no matter which path you take.
We are the only industry Directory to include an Index of Articles so you
can find that favorite news feature, interview, show coverage, game review,
special report, or news item you may want to read again. The second bonus
is the big, colorful wall calendar that provides a glimpse of the entire year’s
events with just one look.
Our staff is proud of the world of information that has been compiled in
this Directory. In November and December, the Play Meter team invested a
serious amount of time and energy to bring this valuable tool to you.
To appreciate the value of Play Meter’s Directory, just ask someone whose
copy has been spirited away by a co-worker. They want it back pronto, and
for good reason: You can’t get this kind of information anywhere else. It’s a
reference book that stays on your desk, or close by, all year long. ▲
