N EWS BULLETIN .,.. BUN KY BYNAM DIES ... Alvan Ray "Bunky" Bynam, 64, suffered a fatal, massive heart attack at his shop on Oct. 14. Bynam started his company, Bunky the Jukebox Man, in 1966 and had been active in both AMOA and the North Carolina Coin Operators Association . "He was a happy-go-lucky guy who never met a stranger," said Bobby Earp, the director of the NCCOA. He is survived by his wife Doris; two sons, Ray and Kenneth; and one daughter, Katherine Morton. At the NCCOA show, held just 10 days after Bynam's death , his friends shared stories and sadly shook their heads over the untimely death. He will be sorely missed. .,.. UPDATE IN MINNESOTA . .. Bowing to pressure from legislators, the Minnesota State Lottery director announced that plans have been dropped for a limited market test that would have allowed people to purchase lottery tickets via their home Nintendo systems. (See related story on page 24.) .,.. LA. POKER CONFERENCE ... The Louisiana Amusement and Music Operators Association (LAMOA) will host a Video Poker Show/Seminar on Nov. 13 at the Sheraton Hotel in Baton Rouge. Panel discussions will focus on rules and regulations as well as general management and financial information. Members of the La. State Police will participate along with game manufacturers. Call Brenda Lollae at (504) 924-5221 for details. .,.. CHANGES AT SEGA . .. Barry Quick has been named vice president of sales for Sega Enterprises USA. He has been with the company since February, working with Sega's line of Class 3 gaming devices in Florida for the Caribbean cruise ship market (he's since relocated to Sega's California headquarters). Quick previously was with Baily's gaming division. "Sega has a unique array of coin-op specialty devices,'' Quick said. "They've been very successful in Asia, and recently we've been trying to penetrate the Western casino and gaming markets." Quick says these products will be handled through Sega Enterprises USA; a separate division will not be created. They are strictly for jurisdictions with legalized gaming. He will be responsible for coin-op amusement and gaming equipment, and other sales staff will be added to handle the gaming activities. In other news concerning Sega, manager of marketing services Donna Cristich and regional sales manager Jim Chapman have left the company. No circumstances surrounding their departure were available as we went to press. .,.. NEW PRESIDENT AT KONAMI ... Mr. Susumu Sakamoto has joined Konami Inc. as its new president. He succeeds Mr. Fumihiro Hishikawa, who resigned as president of Konami Inc., but remains president of Konami Europe and Konami headquarters. We'll have some thoughts from Mr. Sakamoto in our next issue along with a photo. .,.. NEW JUKEBOX CHART IN BILLBOARD ... Billboard magazine debuted a music chart known as "Hot Jukebox Singles" in its Oct. 5 issue. Record Source International is compiling the chart data from 2,000 jukeboxes across the nation for AMOA, which in turn gives it to Billboard. The chart will appear in the first issue of each month for a three-month trial period, with plans to increase the frequency to bi-weekly if it proves successful. .,.. IGT CREATES NEW DIVISIONS ... Expanding gaming opportunities have led International Game Technology to restructure and create several new divisions. IGT-North America will oversee engineering and manufacturing for all gaming jurisdictions in North America, under president Peter Dickinson. !GT-Australia will be headed by Kieran Daley, who replaces Dean McClain, now returning to the United States as vice president of international sales. IGT-Europe will serve Eastern European markets and Africa under Ron Reiland, former general manager of IGT's Montana operations. IGT sales, marketing, and goverr:iment systems wi ll have worldwide responsibilities. Bob McMonigle will head the sales division; marketing and government systems will be under vice presidents Bob Bittman and Jerry Young , respectively. Kerry Reppert will be based in Las Vegas and report to McMonigle. IGTGaming Operations will manage casino and retail gaming operations throughout the world under president Edward Stevenson. John Russell remains president and CEO of the company. .,.. MALINOWSKI JOINS CAPCOM ... Ron Malinowski , who's been with Aladdin's Castle since 1982 and the Bally Group since 1973, has left the arcade chain to join Capcom as special projects director. Malinowski's duties will include heading up the sales and marketing of Capcom USA's Bawlingo and of the newly-formed novelty division featuring Bank-It designed by Laser-Tron . In other news concerning Capcom , it has signed an exclusive, worldwide marketing and sales agreement for Lazer:rron's latest redemption hit, Bank-It, which begins shipping in early December. "We are very happy to have brought Bank-It into the Capcom family of hits,'' said Walker. Added Matt Kelly of Lazer-Tron , "We believe that getting Capcom's outstanding team beh ind Bank-It will benefit both companies." .,... OREGON ALERT .. . A security report issued by Oregon Attorney General Dave Frohnmayer and Oregon State Pol ice Superintendent R. B. Madsen may seriously jeopardize a coin machine operator-involved video lottery program proposed by the Oregon Lottery. In the strongest language possible, the report recommended that coin machine operators and distributors be excluded and that the Lottery run the entire system. The Lottery has taken a hard look at the report and was scheduled to meet with the Lottery Commission on October 28. Look for more on th is volatile situation in our next issue. .,.. NEW WEST VIRGINIA OFFICERS ELECTED ... The West Virginia Music and Vending Association elected the 1991-92 slate of officers and directors at its recent trade show. The officers are Richard Paxton of Charleston , president; Jerry Derrick of Charleston , vice president; Leoma Ballard of Belle, secretary; and Arretta McCarus of Belle, treasurer. CURRIE LEAVES COIN CONTROLS ... Rick Currie has resigned his position as president of Coin Controls. His replacement is Jim Brendel, the company's previous sales manager and district coordinator. "I decided it was best for me to pursue other opportunities," Currie said. " If these opportunities lead me to somewhere in the coinop industry, I'd be delighted." .,.. BELAM UPDATE ... We reported on page 22 that R.H. Belam was scheduled to open a new office in Dedham, Mass., on Nov. 1. As we went to press, Belam's Vic Haim said the com pany hadn't yet settled on a site, and that the office may open later than the target date. We'll have the details when they're ironed out. .,..
