l ETTERS Operating above It's true that old coin machine men never die, they just continue to operate and distribute. Some do business up above where there is nothing but profits; others are condemned to do business down below where there is nothing but red ink! Two dear friends, Lou Dunis and Herb Jones, recently passed away. I am sure they are doing a heavenly business in their new location. One of the many liabilities of old age is that you are constantly losing old friends. Lou Dunis, like me, was an old bingo pinball and slot operator, who everyone in the business respected and admired. He will be greatly missed by many people, especially by those who enjoyed the multitude of fresh salmon sent to them by Lou through the years. As for Herb Jones, this brilliant Harvard graduate and long-time Bally public relations and advertising genius was so good at his job that he was as much responsible for the success of Bally as any official that ever worked for the company. Herb and I were great friends and had many an argument over the nomenclature of instructions and score cards for bingo, pinball, flipper, and other equipment. Herb being a Harvard alumni and me being almost illiterate made it a difficult task to get him to write instructions and score cards that we ''drop-outs'' from kindergarten could read and understand . But I'm happy to say that Herb Jones was an example of the fact that a good martini can sustain one to a long and happy life. So, Herb and Lou, wherever you are, keep the home fires burning.
