See if you can top this for absurdity: Diane Hausman of the Montauk Chamber of Commerce pointed out that there were 17- yes, count them- 17 vend ing machines in East Hampton Town , New York, which are brightly lit at night. She felt that something should be done about it. The Am agansett Citizens Advisory Group also expressed disdain over the lit machines, claiming the town looked like an airport runway at night. Opposition came from one clear-thinki ng supervisor, Tony Bullock, who said , " I thin k people are getting a little over sensitive. I can't believe this board has noth ing better to do than worry about whether a Coke machine has a light in it." So if you happen to be planning your vacation in East Hampton Town , make sure there are enough Coke and Pepsi machines lit up to guide your flight safely into town. Once you get there, you 're on you r own! ADS ON PINBALLS ... Williams and Midway pinball BILL PASSES HOUSE ... ln State Update (see page 20) we reported that a video poker bill in Louisiana had gone to the House floor for a full vote. On June 20th the House approved the bill 65-26 to legalize video poker mach ines. The bill , by Rep. Peppi Bruneau , includes strict penalties for operators who do not get permits for the machines or who try to rig the card games. The bill would also limit the number of machines in each location to five. Machine owners would have to pay a $1,000 per machine state license fee and local govern ments could levy a tax per machine up to $50. The bill will now pass to a Senate committee and if it gets out of that comm ittee it will go to the Senate for a fu ll vote. From there it will go to the governor's desk where he can sign it, veto it, or let it sit. If he lets it sit for two weeks it wi ll automatically become law. Louisiana is one of several states hoping to have legislation passed to legalize video poker machines. David Goudeau , vice president of the Louisiana Amusement and Music Operators Association (LAMOA), said, " We have been fighting for this four years. The first year we were laughed out of committee. But we didn't give up. We've been back every year, and thi s time they took us seriously. We have accumulated trust with our grass roots effort. Educating our legislators and plain hard work got thi s passed." ~ STAN & SHARON HARRIS ON MTV.. .
